Battle for Bilbao 1937 - Now for BAT/TGA!
« on: May 16, 2021, 12:33:21 PM »

And here comes the last of my old SCW campaigns to be lifted over into the BAT/TGA universe:

This is a semi-historical, 15-mission static campaign, set in the months of March to June 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, portraying the fighting in the air during the important Nationalist offensive in northern Spain. You are a pilot in "La Gloriosa", the Republican Air Force. You are first flying the Letov S.231 biplane fighter, later the Vultee V1A "Intruder" light bomber. In one mission you will pilot the Lockheed Vega, in another the Gourdou-Leseurre GL.633. So this is not only for those who enjoy dog-fights. This is also a campaign where you get to try on a number of lesser known types!

You can download it here: https://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=2163

Historical background: By September 1936 the Nationalists under Franco had cut off the Republican controlled areas in northern Spain from the French border and from the rest of Spain. To conquer and control this northern region would be very profitable because of its valuable resources, and at the same time the crushing of this large Republican enclave meant that the Nationalists could concentrate their forces in what in essence would be a two-front war. (By this time Franco realized that Madrid, the capital, was not going to be conquered quickly.)

It was not just the Basque countries rich resources that made them a tempting target. Also, the Republicans in the north was weakened by struggles between Basque nationalists and leftists. Furthermore its major supplies came by sea. Franco ordered to his commanders in the Madrid front to go on the defensive and send all available resources to the north. The Nationalist offensive started in late March 1937. In June, after fierce fighting, Bilbao fell. After this it was just a matter of time before the rest of the northern enclave would be crushed.

This was perhaps the turning point of the whole war. With the conquest of the North the Nationalist controlled the 36 per cent of the Spanish industrial production, 60 per cent of the coal and all the steel production. The Republic had lost the Army of the North (more than 200,000 soldiers). It now looked impossible for the Republic to win a complete military victory. And Franco decided to start a new offensive against Madrid…

Some more shiny screenies here:

Thanks for looking!  :)

As usual Poltawa beautiful, careful and interesting, but I'm not entirely sure about the second mission launch. The planes roll down and explode....  in my Il-2.

Yaro, this is not your install, it's a map related problem.  :o I've tried to work around it. Try starting on auto-pilot - and report back!

Yaro, I have tried both mission 2 and mission 3 and has been unable to see a reptition of that. The airfields of this map ARE a bit iffy, but I hope to have worked around that.

In mission 3 the base is under aerial attack, and if you are not swift enough taking off, you can very well get blasted by enemy aircraft. But this is in mission 3, not 2.

Poltava, mission 3 is fine, I understand the quick scramble, I have been playing sturmovik for 12 years

In mis.2 the autopilot didn't help, so I changed the planes to start

I'm sorry if I messed with your work a bit.
 Now it's ok

You make interesting missions and campaigns, I like them. Keep it up Poltava.
    Greetings and much health.
