Convair B-36 Peacemaker (update 27-06-21)
« on: May 23, 2021, 02:53:05 AM »

Convair B-36 Peacemaker

The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" is a strategic bomber built by Convair and operated by the USAF from 1949 to 1959. The B-36 is the largest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft ever built. It had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built, at 230 ft (70.1 m). The B-36 was the first bomber capable of delivering any of the nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal from inside its four bomb bays without aircraft modifications. With a range of 10,000 mi (16,000 km) and a maximum payload of 87,200 lb (39,600 kg), the B-36 was capable of intercontinental flight without refueling.

Initially built with six R-4360 Wasp Major 3500hp engines in pusher configuration, it soon became apparent that additional jet power would significantly increase performance. This led to the mounting of four J47 in double pods outside the main engines from the D version onwards. Earlier B series aircraft were soon retrofitted. The F version introduced a souped up 3800hp version of Wasp Major.

Retrofit and change of equipment became an almost yearly routine throughout the ten year service life of the B-36.  While at first, it sported sixteen 20mm guns in eight turrets (some retractable), this now outdated defensive armament was removed in 1954/55 with Project Featherweight, leaving only a radar controlled tail turret.

Its greatest achievement however was, never to be used in combat. A job well done.

The reason of being for this huge aircraft was global deployment of anything in the US atomic arsenal of the early 1950s, when sometimes twice a year new bomb types joined the stockpile. Anything, Anywhere, Anytime.

The B-36 was the only aircraft capable of delivering the biggest bomb ever mass-produced by the US, the Mk17 Hydrogen Bomb of 15 to 20 Megatons. Even the B-52 would have needed modifications for that. The B-36 also was the only plane to ever carry the conventional T.12 Cloudmaker "Earthquake" bomb of 40.000lbs high explosives, even a pair of them.

Eventually, bombs became smaller and jets overtook the B-36 in speed and altitude and matched it with lift capabilities.

Blast from the past. Jump into the pilot seat of the first ten-engine plane in Il-2 and take it into the blue skies.

SAS - Mods is Our Profession

This mod features a lot of exclusive, spec built ordinance:

T-12 Cloudmaker, Mk4, 5 and 6 nuclear bombs, Mk17 and Mk15 hydrogen bombs of the megaton category. Dreamk has done a superb job and equipped them with a very sophisticated set of fuses: Choose altitude based on barometric pressure, height or set a delay.  Il-2 can't handle an actual effect that resembles a megaton blast but make no mistake: You better be high and far off and going fast when a Mk17 goes off. "Safety" altitude was considered well above 30.000ft.

*this is a Mk4 demo drop.

SAS~Storebror is fully responsible for all the java and the detailed animation of the turrets and the gunner stations. This mod showed us that there is an actual hard limit for how many pits and stations a plane is supposed to have in Il-2. It didn't stop Storebror :)
The turrets will unfold automatically when enemies are detected. You can manually deploy them by using the "canopy" key.

Quite generally, this is a plane which brings IL-2 to its limits. Not only is it the first and only ten engine hybrid plane, it is too large, too heavy, too everything but I think we made the game fit it. SAS~Storebor had to re-educate the game to accept the many cockpits of the B-36, as they are beyond the standard limit.

For features and operation advice please refer to the pdf manual that comes with the mod!

One of Mike's nice videos from a test mission I made: Ivy King

November 16, 1952 a B-36 dropped the bomb for the Ivy King nuclear test over Runit Island in the Enewetak Atoll.

Every day this place leaves me more and more stunned with what can be squeezed out this decade-and-a-half old simulator.
Installed it as soon as I found this thread and it works absolutely flawlessly, barring an absolutely minor and easily solved problem.

For non-BAT users, while the plane runs just fine with just the listed dependencies, the planes' full loadouts will not show up in-game unless you install DreamK's Barometric and Hydrostatic Fuzes. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,51925.0.html. The manual briefly mentions it, but I thought it'd be helpful to point it out here.

Even then, this is still a miracle of modding and I thank all of the team for creating it.

So far no issues with these magnesium giants in my CUP game

Special thanks to everyone involved; 100% well worth all the wait. This is why I'd rather wait a year and have a complete product than have a rush job

Quality over Quantity anytime ;D

Thank you very much for publishing the stand-alone version B-36! :)
Fitted well in my heavily modded 4122 + 5.3 + 1.33 installation and works with SaSengine mod. 2.7.5! ]thumleft[

Let me suggest a few patches (fixes) for the cockpit currently present and for navigation and landing lights:

Small changes and additions of textures in the pilots cockpit and changes to the workplaces of the navigator and operators.

Installation of landing lights in the front of the fuselage and changing the position of navigation lights on the wingtips.

For installation:

1. Make a backup.
2. Unpack the archive and add it to your folder with the B-36 mod, with replacement - agree.

Have a nice flight! ;)

Nice!

However, when I made the lights, I decided to ditch the landing lights from their original position because of the unavoidable and very irriating illumination that you get in the cockpit.  For me that's more annoying than it helps land on a well illuminated runway.

The way Il-2 handles light apparently makes it impossible to avoid this parasitic light when the source is so close to the cockpit. I therefore went with the two "taxi light" positions in the jet pods.
