Tomoose. You're right. A little Kaspar. It is pointless but it creates a little atmosphere. Waited a long time for the deck crew. Of course the game is about airplanes and they are great. But I miss the people. The earth, especially the airfields, are practically deserted, like after an epidemic. A ghost earth. Now I spend a lot of time following the hundreds of wonderful little actions that take place on the ground. I love her. I follow the cars, watch the flares. Made very lovingly. I would like to thank all the modders who think up and install these things so lovingly. It's the salt in the soup.

I'm sure I am missing something obvious here, but how is the LSO for WAW implemented in game? I've downloaded the mod, then added the LSO folder to BATMODS, made the changes to the .ini and properties, then activated the mod through JSGME. Yet, nothing happens when approaching a carrier.

Is there another step to employ?

Thanks for any assistance.

This LSO mod would seem to address the necessary elements for a graphical LSO figure to be implemented.

My first notion would be a texture containing the figure with all the required paddle positions, in an array. Code would select the relevant portion of the graphic by the X,Y coordinates of the image. Even a simple, static, 2-D image, without any animation, could be a useful first step. Of course, carriers would have to have implemented a new LSO object, so that it could be placed at the proper location on the fantail.

Sounds nice in theory but I doubt it would be useful at all because most of the times you would receive a wave off... You either fly the perfect approach or you get waved off... All WW2 Sims that featured a LSO had that problem ....this combined with the rather restricted POV of people without TrackIR would render a fully animated LSO a nice eycandy but not much more IMHO... Landing on a WW2 carrier in IL2 requires experience and practice and no virtual LSO would make that task easier IMHO....

I'll mention this again for what it's worth...

For coop flying, what our little group has done is use the LSO Cam (a mod that puts the usual carrier camera back near the LSO spot).
The first guy shot down or to land back at the carrier, assumes the job of LSO via the LSO Cam and gives real-time feedback via comms to the rest of the group as they are on final.  So no visual aid but real-time audio on approach from the "LSO".

It's certainly not perfect (obviously we're not trained LSOs) but is good enough that the "live" LSO can advise on 'too high' or 'too low' and 'go around' etc.

Just tossin' it out there as an option.
cheers,
Tomoose

Where do you find the LSO object? I can't seem to locate it in FMB. Thanks.

Silly question, but have you installed it from my download in the first post?

Yes. I certainly think so. As instructed, I placed the LSO folder in BAT mods, then enabled. I also made the changes to the respective .ini and properties lines.

Should there be an object in the FMB Objects drop down menu entitled LSO? If so, under what category? I don’t see one.

You will find the object in the 'stationary ships' sub menu. It is called 'landing assistance carriers'. Just place it anywhere in the mission map, make sure that it is set to the same colour as your aircraft, and you should be good to go.
