Fire Over Sicily Part 3: Fiat G55 Centauro
« on: July 06, 2021, 02:58:44 PM »

This campaign is a 10-mission fighter campaign for the Regia Aeronautica Fiat G55 over Sicily in 1943. It was written and tested using the SAS BAT Modpack and will require BAT 4.1.3 or later to work properly. The campaign was created by Lars and Von.

Introduction and History by Lars
The Fiat G55 Centauro was one of three contending modern Italian fighters of World War Two. It was most competent at high altitudes and outperformed the then best German fighter, Bf109G6, at those heights!
The Italians received only 38 before the Armistice, which were allocated almost entirely to 353 Squadrilgia of 20 Gruppo, including several prototypes. Despite the overwhelming numbers of Allied aircraft, the G55 managed a few notable successes. It was active from June to August 1943, although not in July due to problems noted below.

The Italian authorities preferred the MC205V Veltro, whereas the Germans favoured the Sagittario at first. The G55 was noted as probably the best overall but it suffered weakness from the tail assembly which caused tyres to burst easily. This lead to low serviceability in July, exacerbated by the constant Allied air raids.

Most of all, the Germans realised it took 15000 hours to produce as opposed to 5000 hours for the BF109G. There were plans in Germany to install the more powerful DB603 engine on the G55 and designate it as the G56. The war ended before this was fully completed.

Installation
This campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available here:
BAT Downloads (sas1946.com)
It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.

Extract the FOS_G55.zip file to a temporary directory.
•   Copy the decompressed Missions folder and the decompressed PaintSchemes folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
•   In the New Pilot Career page, choose Regia Aeronautica in the Air Force selection drop-down. Choose Fire over Sicily Part 3: the Fiat G55  in the Career drop-down.
•   We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
•    The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

Credits
Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack. This campaign uses Command and Control and Trigger functions that were recently added to BAT.
We also thank the skinners out there. They bring a lot of life and realism to IL-2 missions everywhere. We could not identify the originators of all the skins we used in this campaign, but these we know:
•   G55 - Stefano and Max the Hitman
•   MC202 - abraxa and serval
•   G50bis - Boelcke and stanislao
•   Re2005 - sakai
•   Re2001 – Metratron

Good luck Tute, and watch out for those P-38s.
