Operation Hannibal Baltic
« on: July 08, 2021, 08:44:03 AM »

On the morning of 16 April, Boelcke and Greif left Pillau harbor as safety ships and part of an evacuation convoy . About two hours later, at 7:30 a.m., they were attacked by Soviet Il-2 fighter planes about four nautical miles east of the tip of the Hela peninsula . Although they managed to shoot down one of the attacking aircraft, Boelcke received two bomb hits in the forward engine room leading to power failure and severe fires. The ship maintained buoyancy, but on the morning of 17 April she was hit again in another attack and sank in position ♁54 ° 34′44 ″ N , 18°55 5512 ″ E. Twenty people were killed.
