Water "plates" for raised water levels
« on: July 09, 2021, 10:36:17 PM »

I posted a few days ago in BAT Tech Help about an annoying little detail I observed where lakes and rivers above sea level are concerned. Have a look:

As you can see, the water isn't visually at lake level. Planes behave as if the water is actually there despite looking like they're sitting on the edge of a void into the second dimension.

What I'm requesting is a few different sizes of a special "plate" object without any collision that looks like water, allowing these voids to be filled with something that makes it look a thousand times better. The plates would appear just a hair below the physical surface level so they merge nicely with the surrounding shores without clipping through them. Lakes like the above example (on the map Kuril Islands and Attu), rivers above dams on the North Korea maps, etc. could all be patched up to look much nicer.

Ideally, the plates would have animated waves just like the normal water in the game, although this could potentially cause lag and/or look funky when the plates are rotated.

I have already made that question here if you want to take a look. ;)

They said it's not some sort of "bug" because it was just the way the map was built. Yes I know it would look annoying but I'm not too sure if that would be fixed. Besides I'm not a Modder.  :D

From what I read, there are ways to counter the issue of elevated river water levels in IL-2 already - it's just that the map maker needs to be aware of the issue, needs to know how to fix it and eventually needs to apply the necessary steps (which might be tedious).
However, if there's a way to solve this issue already, then there's no need to "fix" something that ain't broken.
If this is so annoying to you, then get in touch with the one who made that map, or alternatively learn to modify maps and fix it.

I think the general consensus here lends some practicality to this request, although I'm not sure if making animated water as an object would cause lag.

Who says that animated water was the only solution?

Ehh, true... The waves would also look a little wonky with the plates being rotated to fit certain spots.

Really, just flat unanimated water would look a thousand times better than a gaping 2D hole.

Although, going back to the thread mentioned earlier, it looks like a better fix is being discussed. Maybe it'll work out after all.

I made several elevated lakes and downhill flowing rivers on my map Transcaucasia and Caucassus Gate, using the modifications of map_h.tga, having map_c.tga untouched.  These lakes allow to put there ships, taking the hydroplanes off and landing, see an example here soviet ship on Lake Sevan.

The only limitation there is that defolt bridges cannot be used, the bridge  objects KDP by Kevin must be applied, then the traffic over there runs well.
