mapping: some way of dealing with horizontal rock strata??
« on: July 27, 2021, 08:06:13 PM »

Hi all
at the risk of saying something requested already, I'm willing to cop the usual flak.....
A major map-building problem, especially for arid countries, is this:
On the sides of most cliffs, hills & valleys: the geology typically comprises horizontal strata [of rock, soil, etc]
As these cliffs etc run in any direction of the compass, there's no way their striated sides can be represented in Il2 by application of standard textures. [except on very small maps - eg my own map of Lord Howe Island. But that crude attempt offers no general solution].

For many dry countries, this is a MASSIVE limitation on a map's appearance.
I've tried to think of some way around it - but I'm no mod builder!  However, here's an idea:
Maybe a solution based on ground plates might work? If, say, a set of ~10 custom ground plates could be made depicting striated rock, that plate could  sit on any hillside, regardless of slope, and be oriented in the compass direction required. If anyone is interested in making such ground plates,  I can supply images of striated rock.
Otherwise, the only odd thing about these plates would be their size & shape. I guess they'd best be right-angle triangles, with short side no more than 200 metres [maybe 100?] - as dictated by the distance between height points in the Il2 landscape.
Any thoughts?
