Over the hill from us was the lagoon, and we saw gators there every day. My wife and I were hanging out in the vehicle after the kids went to sleep in the tent one night, and we joked that they might get eaten by a gator.

Agreed.  I fly this map often just for fun.  I know Pensacola like the back of my...eh...yeah...yeah, my hand.  I saw the TBD at the museum and haven't been the same sense.  Wonderful place.  Interesting project.

Cheers and prost

Yea, I remember visiting the museum at Pensacola. Could easily spend a whole day there.

NAAS Corry Field, just north of Pensacola Chevalier Field (in the background)

Look at this funky maze of 8 (short) paved runways! Taxi traffic nightmare. Good thing the basic trainers were Navy yellow all over!

New layout for Navy Chocktaw Field.

It's part of the Army Eglin area complex (Auxiliary 10) but was always used by the Navy as an out field.
Despite the high Aux number it was among the first built in 1942

I never thought about a Pensacola map, but the idea is very cool. I went to Pensacola for my Navy "A" school, and always imagined what the older airfields looked like in their glory days.

The map itself is quite old and by agracier, I don't even know when it came out first. It just never was fully populated and finished. It was a bit of an abandoned WIP.  I started this as a self-tutorial in texturing and experimenting with map builder tools.

Here are some more progress screenies.

Pensacola layout pre-war

and jet age version. The old area is completely torn down and built over these days so this may be some early cold war era state when it was used helicopter base.

Right next to Pensacola is the Eglin area, a vast USAAF /USAF training complex.

Eglin pre war

Eglin in the 1960s, the old second piste partially torn up, the new second built.

Smoke breaks, at Corry Station, watching the Blue Angels practice . . .
Those are some great memories.

If you can make your Christmas deadline, I'll consider it my best stocking-stuffer!
Haha!

Just when I think you're out of cool ideas you do this . . . similar to the airship surprise.

Thank you for the updates, Vampire. :)

Great work, we have very little in the way of maps for this area of the world so it is nice to see something such as this. 8)

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D
