The question is "About conf."
« on: October 29, 2021, 06:36:06 PM »

The question is "About conf."
"If the airfield flickers when viewed from high altitude, add these two lines to the OpenGL section to fix the problem", but I don't understand English, I don't understand. ..
Could someone please write a sentence like this?
On the map of "KANTO", objects on the ground are blinking in the scene where B29 bombs Yokohama from 6000m.
I want to fix this phenomenon.
I'm Japanese and use "google translate".

Make sure this is at the bottom under the OpenGL section of the Conf.ini
Good Luck :)

Those polygon offset values have been in effect since forever. I currently have the same ones in my conf.ini. But this does not cure the flicker seen at moderate and long distance caused by surfaces in plane with the terrain.

Many objects have as the farthest LOD a very simple, flat texture placed at zero height. From sufficiently far away, this texture sitting on the ground suffers 'Z-plane fighting', if you will, where the texture and underlying ground texture battle it out to see who will dominate.  ;)

I've made a start on fixing this for a number of objects, mostly the more common ones used on Pacific maps. In most instances, it involves lifting  the zero-height texture to that which is characteristic of the upper part or top. It is wonderful to fly over a city or town or busy airfield and no longer have a scintillating constellation of flickering buildings.

For these objects, and some others not suffering this issue, I've fixed collision boxes and fixed/added shadows

There are still MANY objects to tackle yet. I should issue an interim pack of those corrections and fixes dome thus far...

Hi, Glenn!
The OP didn't seem to have those lines in their version (?) of the game (whichever that is), so it my have helped a little. I was actually pretty proud of myself for figuring out that he was quoting from the "Inside The conf.ini" thread, translating to Japanese, then back to English.

And there is one more reason I am beginning to believe that you must never sleep! Thank you for all . . . I men all of the work you've done and are still doing for this sim and the community.

Hello WxTech :)
Thank you for your comment.
I changed the numbers to "-0.15" and "-3.0"
The blink of objects on the ground continues.
I expect an effect that can be fixed.

I'm not surprised that the flicker has not been fixed by that pair of conf.ini entries. As I noted, those offsets have been in effect for many years, perhaps since the first game release.

I will soon release a package of the objects I've worked on.

There will of course be more work to do on other objects in the future, but this first selection will make a decent start. And as I mentioned before, more than just the far LOD (level of detail) flicker has been dealt with.

Hello WxTech :)
After all, when expressing a fine pattern, a slight difference in angle creates the pattern.
It's a phenomenon called "moiré", but it may be unavoidable because it is expressed in pixels.
It is the same phenomenon that the antenna wire looks like a staircase.
It would be nice if objects that were far apart could be represented by "close flat colors".

You are describing an issue that can be at least partly mitigated by setting anti-aluasing to a larger value.

That is quite different from the matter at hand here, which results from an alternating priority being given to two co-planar polygons lying more distant than some threshold and as the point of view varies. If the point of view freezes in position, the flickering ceases. This can be seen when examining a map in the 'free' view mode. While looking toward objects suffering this problem, the flickering is active only while you are moving the viewpoint with the mouse. Let go of the mouse, and the flickering stops.

Of course, moire-like patterns will exhibit a dynamic movement or shimmer while the view is in motion, stopping when the view freezes to motionlessness. But the underlying cause is quite different.

The values -3, -0.15 are in the directX section .. In the OpenGL section, there are other values .. Try them. In the manual on the download page, you can see the attached recommended config ;)
Best wishes.
