Idea: Ships firing distress flare when destroyed
« on: November 10, 2021, 06:36:04 PM »

Hey

I've come up with an idea in the past days that ships would fire distress flares when destroyed

They could be red lights animated as if they were shot up to somewhere between 2-300 meters followed by a trail of smoke and slowly fell back to earth fading out

Something like this:

I just put the light above the ship and destroyed it in FMB ;D

Perhaps something like sputnikshock's signal flare included in BAT

This would be purely an eye candy but it would add so much to naval battles or operations (especially at night)

The only problem is that in war there would be no signal flares because they would alert the enemy.

I recall reading in historical material about torpedoed merchantmen firing up flares.

If they are already destroyed, I'd doubt that they'd be worried about getting spotted by the enemy. I'm just speculating though. I don't know what the standard operating procedure was.

Exactly
If I was torpedoed on the middle of the freezing atlantic, I'd rather have myself picked up by enemies than not being spotted
Ships also fire flares in Silent Hunter games, a submarine sim series

It's just purely an idea. Someone might like it, and get to it someday. I'm too dumb for anything besides sound, and it certainly won't be today when I'll manage to learn even the simplest stuff lol

Very good idea. If anyone has seen the movie 'Greyhound', you'll remember that merchantmen did indeed fire distress flares when hit and sinking ...

Yes, eye candy, but that is what makes the game such fun.

Good one, Flares are Decoration, my saying... or for Hooligans at a Soccer Match...

While wrestling of late with trying to implement oil slick effect, this kind of object or effect came back to me as something worth striving for. It will likely push me to the limits and beyond what feeble skills I might possess. So, no promises!  😉

G'day mate

Did you watch the video in Piotrek1's link?
Video was posted on YouTube by TD more than 10 years ago.

Oil slick, life boat, debris and flare.
All would be nice little inclusions.

I did watch that old TD video. A shame how what looked like worthy additions ended up shelved, and not even released as is to serve as a foundation to build upon, even if at the time deemed incomplete.

Having to effectively 'reinvent the wheel' is regrettable.

Especially nowadays after the modding community has notably shrunk. I wish I had taken the plunge--chimp that I am--into Java a decade earlier than I did. I'm a day late and a dollar short.  :(

Well, I got this to work, including with an illumination source that dimly lights up the immediate surroundings.
