Thinking the zimmerit alone would be going off half-cocked, I took the decision to order some extra detailing for the King Tiger, so while I'm waiting for delivery, let's get to work on the Jagdtiger...

Off to a flying start. So far, so good - a very nicely detailed kit that's falling together in good old Tamiya 'shake & bake' style. Some tiny details ahead, but I'm liking what I see so far...

The plan is to take a saw to sections of the one-piece mudguards to represent the Jagdtiger's tendency to shake parts off when on the move.

My, that's a big one...

I could have cut corners with the gun breech as not much - if any - of the interior will be seen with the back doors closed and the commander in place.

I might just get the build finished tonight.

As far as I got tonight. Some tiny brackets for spare tracks, finishing off the engine deck (more tiny parts) and the mud guards to do, and she'll be ready for some paint.  :)

Thanks for looking in, more big cat ballyhoo soon.  ;)

Almost ready for some paint. Some time-consuming fiddly stages with small parts that I'd do differently given the time again. However, I like the look of those naked spare track lugs. Shades of the old Matchbox two colour kits at the moment.

Well, now's a really good time to talk me out of chopping up those one-piece mud guards...

More plastic panzer pandemonium soon.  ;)

Too late now. ;D

I'll give the glue a while to set and then it's time to get the rattle cans out. Really looking forward to painting this one.

Thanks as always for dropping by, back soon with more colourful kitty chaos.  ;)

Real life has encroached again, but I've got a few days off and can catch up with the Jagdtiger. While I'm waiting for the undercoat to dry, I've been planning ahead with the King Tiger - which is where some of you guys might be able to offer some input.

Having decided upon an Eastern Front Pz Abt 505 vehicle, I've been hoovering up photographic references, and am happy that despite my initial thoughts that it would have looked a bit 'rough edged', the zimmerit on the turret was chipped off in a neat square to show off the charging knight emblem, so no problems there. However, I'm wondering if the cammo patern might have been three colour yellow, brown and dark green rather than the more commonly portrayed sandy yellow and red brown. It's difficult to tell once I start making allowances for light and shadows, but I was wondering if any skinners experienced in such matters could offer up any thoughts? Well, anybody looking in with an opinion would be welcome, of course. I wouldn't call myself a 'rivet counter', but having said that, would like to get my interpretation as authentic as my research and modelling capabilities allow.

I've found that giving the pics a sepia tint brings out contrast, but might be setting off down the wrong road with that.

So...any thoughts?

To me, the pic with two young ladies shows best what I'm wittering on about. Indeed, someone's colourised it as if to back up, although I'll be going with a red knight.

This one seems to have3 colours to my untrained eye.

Different unit, but interesting - the spots seem a different colour to those used on the underlying three tone cammo. No zimmerit, either - I *think* they stopped slapping it on in November '44.

Meanwhile, in Jagdtigerland...

A very long way to go - but she's almost ready for a first coat of Klear and decals. Due to the size of this one, I'll be treating the running gear seperately.

All five colour options with this kit are variations on a theme, representing Jagdtigers from the unit commanded by Otto Carius in the spring of 1945. Having trawled the internet for photographic references, I'm leaning towards 'spottier' vehicles than the ones on Tamiya's colour charts. You've probably worked out by now that she's going to be filthy.   ;D

Thanks very much for kind words, shahryar.  :)

I spent some time since the last pics cleaning up the spots and putting red oxide primer on the areas exposed by the missing mudguards and am looking forward to weathering the little monster after I've put the decals on. I'll try not to let you down with the final result.  ;)
