For dedicated telescopic/tube sight views, widen the FoV
« on: December 12, 2021, 08:43:41 AM »

Planes, such as the Ki-27, which have dedicated tube sight views that are activated with the 'gunsight view' key, currently have the FoV for this view typically set to 31 degrees in the cockpit class. This is fine for the old days when 4:3 aspect monitors were more commonly used. But today the 16:9 aspect is almost universal, with some fraction being of an even wider ratio.

Because the FoV is always defined on the horizontal axis, screens of increasingly wider aspect ratio suffer worsening cut-off of the sight view at the top and bottom. For really wide screens the view becomes somewhat tank slit-like!  :D

And so a new FoV of 45 should be set here, which is perfect for 16:9 screens. I've done this for my own game, and it's an improvement for at least two reasons:

- The full image is now seen, with no cut-off at the top and bottom.
- The image scale is reduced, making flight control and aiming a bit easier.

Yes I do it too when I test another of these planes equipped with such a tube!

But it is also valid to do for all types of bombing sights!
I use these values:
- type He-111
//     CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 23.913");
    CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 31.086");

- type TB-3
//     CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 45.0");
    CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 58.5");

- type Pe-2
//     CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 50.0");
      CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 65.0");

There is also the special gunner sight and the telescopic sight of the Me-410.
- type telescopic sight of the Me-410
//      CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 30");
      CmdEnv.top().exec("fov 50");

I've begun looking over the relevant planes, to see which warrant treatment. At the same time, in some cockpits at least, expanding the range of 6dof movement could be worthwhile. There are a few dozen to check out; those I've 'fixed' so far are just those I fly.

I'll at least get the ball rolling by releasing some number of cockpits very shortly...
