Re; Skin resize.

THANK YOU MAce !!  the HD are great on your detailed harrier gals - but for online in our group (some have older systems) the 12mb is not so FPS/lag freindly :(

Now, can you tell me how you re-saved the file as a.TGB pls? (need to do that for some other HD default s!)

Yes I set the throttle to 90 . Every thing is fine in the missions that accompanied the new Harriers. It is only a problem when using other maps and mission. Previous Harrier mods VTOL worked AOK in 4.12.  I just need to solve or find out what the issue is. Its' a fun project. Thanks. No fun using two different keyboards. I almost got a new one today. Forgot I had a Razor with my other PC.

Hi Ranwers, marvin is not imagining things - I am also experiencing this problem, too, and it does seem to be map-specific. For example, no problems with VTO on the Biscay map, but on 'war over italy' or 'donbass', VTO is not possible. With 90 degrees nozzle, 100% throttle, the Harrier will not rise vertically, but starts to travel backwards. If you nose forward to counteract this the aircraft simply tries to take-off conventionally. Same with both patched and unpatched version, BAT Flashpoint.

Yours,

Clive

Maybe is it because the thrust is inferior to the plane's weight ?

Well done Gaston, you have hit the nail on the head!

With a 100% fuel level or heavy weapons load, the Harriers cannot not do a vetical takeoff on some maps. Reducing fuel level and/or weapons load, you can do a vertical takeoff on these maps.

You will notice the same issue with the AV-8B with a 100% fuel level or heavy weapons load on some maps.

Inconsistency between maps may be due the difference in density altitude because of different ground height at mission start or some other conditions.

re: resizing skin1o.tgb’s

xAx, thank you for your positive comments, very much appreciated.

Need to have a graphics tool for this.

Options:
InfranView (Free – 4mb download) https://www.irfanview.com/64bit.htm
Gimp (Free – 250mb download) https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
Photoshop (Commercial Product)

Steps:
Copy the skin1o.tgb file from the source aircraft folder (3do/Plane/aircraft name/summer folder) and place it another folder or on the desktop. Make sure you make a backup of the skin1o.tgb file as well in a seperate location.

Rename the skin1o.tgb to skin1o.tga (accept any warning prompts)

Open your graphics tool and go to the resize option (usually under the Image menu). If you are using InfranView, don’t worry about the all black screen (even when you have loaded the skin1o.tga file).

Set new size to 1024 x 1024

OK to save

Then rename the skin1o.tga to skin1o.tgb (accept any warning prompts)

Then move the resized skin1o.tgb file back into the original source aircraft folder (3do/Plane/aircraft name/summer folder).

cheers mace

This is what I do, with IrfanView. But, strangely, when I open the tgb (after having renamed it in tga) file, all that appears is a completely black image... normally, a normal image should appear... it surprised me a lot. Any reason this skin is looking totally black I did not understand...

Clive's rough guide to VTO:

Maximum VTO takeoff weight on a troublesome map = c.20,000lb.

80% fuel (no loadout) will give a comfortable VTO on all the troublesome maps I've tried so far.

40% fuel and light/medium loadouts are OK for VTO. e.g. 2 laser-guided bombs, 2 cluster bombs etc.

Any heavier loadouts such as 4 bombs - no chance.

This reflects real life, when VTO was very rarely used due to excessive fuel consumption, and the Harrier simply could not VTO with heavy ordnance.

Hi mace, I have a query about the Sea Eagle loadouts (although this might be a procedural error on my part):

Sea Eagle loadout comes with 2 x AIM-9s as well:

Sea Eagle is selected by default at the start of a mission - you can then use the wheelbrakes key to cycle through the engagement options i.e. off, engaged, or auto. All good.

Now select an AIM-9, which gives the the same engagement options. All good.

However, if you now re-select a Sea Eagle and try to cycle through the engagement menu, you can't - it only shows the AIM-9, and you cannot re-engage the Sea Eagle.

In other words, if you ever deselect a Sea Eagle and select AIM-9 instead, you cannot then use the Sea Eagle after that point. This is true even if you fire off the AIMS - you can select a Sea Eagle, but the engagement options still show AIM-9s.

Am I doing something wrong?

Greetings. On reply #58. I made a Single mission for BAT Jet War 3 in which I use  ( switch between ) both Sea Eagle and 2 Aim 9s with no problem in any order during a single attack. My target( s ) are freighter dropping off cargo/weapons at a coastal point and a Air drop of para troopers at the same location as the weapons. If you use the radar you will get an audible cue/sound  from the  air/sea radar ( use the "C " key  to activate in and out of,  air/sea radar)  Sea Eagle missile indicating ( view )  the direction of the ship. When in effective range you can view the ship and transport aircraft ( with paratroopers ) at the same time. I switch back and forth ( your choice )  between the weapons. Your only limit is the radar lock on the Sea Eagle missile  on the ship. I fire the Aim 9s take out the air transport.  Once the air transport is taken out. obtain height and distance . Check radar and visual. Activate the Sea Eagle and take out the ship. It only takes one missile hit, but sometimes I use two. I use Alt + E  for missile selection.  You only need  distance for this combo because of an armed freighter in the mission.  I make  above mentioned selections in flight.
