How to make rivers?
« on: January 18, 2022, 04:58:23 AM »

I've been tinkering with making maps to great success so far, but making rivers has so far eluded me. Is there a trick to making them, or a guide to follow, or some other thing? Please let me know if there's somewhere I should look for rivers in particular if it exists already - I wasn't able to find anything myself.

G'day RobotSpark

Sorry for the late reply, really hoping one of the regular map builders would've chipped in.
Unfortunately I haven't played around with rivers for well over a year, was planning on jumping on one of my unfinished maps during my Christmas break but refreshed my 3D modelling skills instead.

You have to draw rivers directly on the map using Photoshop or GIMP, from memory I drew on the map_h using RGB 0.
It also has to be 3 pixels wide although there are tricks to get slightly narrower rivers using blurring.

I recommend checking out the mapworx section as well, there's a lot of great general map building information hidden in there.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, hopefully someone with more knowledge will see my reply and say "That's not how it's done DICKHEAD" and offer you some more detailed advice.

Good luck we need good map builders, they are few and far between.

EDIT:     I drew directly onto map_c using map_h as a guide.
