Red Sea map
« on: January 27, 2022, 07:33:29 AM »

Here is a download link for a WIP map of part of the Red Sea are, part of Eritrea and Yemen.

Still very much a work in progress and needing the additions of both cultivated desert fields and some kind of desert scrubland textures.

Looks fascinating! Btw, are you only working on this map or are you working on multiple maps at once?

I think I have some 5 maps or so that I am working on to a serious degree and many more that are in a basic stage with just 1 texture and an imported load.ini and actors. These are however flyable. I can make one of the basic maps from a DEM in around 30-45 mins. But 1 texture only to see how the terrain looks. Flat terrain is mostly out because it requires textures that don't tile into patterns. Mountains are better looking and texture more esthetically with less tiling apparent.

I've 2 more maps that are for all purposes finished right now, but which need a few small touches that can only be found by repeatedly flying around in them. I'll get these 2 out in a short while. One is of the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam and another is in a fictional land with a predominantly green and forested and farming look.

And then it all depends on how the texturing goes on the others. Sometimes it goes so smoothly like with the recent far North map and other times I go through 10-12 or more sets of textures before it meshes together on a map. And I try to make each map with mostly a different set of textures if possible, this to give some variety to the landscapes.

I can't wait to see that fictional map. You can never have enough fictional maps.

That's nice to hear. I always thought that the main battlefront areas of the wars were the preferred location for a map. Fictional maps are somewhat easier as there are no constraints on the textures. They needn't approximate the real geographical location ...

Here a few screenshots of the fictional map - which has no name yet ...

This may be a good candidate for a Syldavia-Borduria border region.

That is not a bad idea. I've been scouring my head for a name and couldn't come up with anything. But now though, I will be obliged to reread my Tintin comics ... ha ha

If you have the names of any cities/town in the Syldavian-Bordurian stories that would help a lot in making a version of this fictional map as Syl-Bord. I've the names of the capital cities, but a few extra names would be useful. Otherwise I'd have to delve deeper into the comics to find more.

Here's all known Syldavian towns here: https://tintin.fandom.com/wiki/Syldavia#Cities

As for Borduria, the only named city is the capital, SzohĂ´d. So feel free to make up town names as required.

Here is something coming along on those lines ... landscape done, airfields too ... just need to do some urban/city areas ...

One important lore related detail is that Douma is a bustling port city. Might need a little revision here in order to mostly comply with Tin Tin canon.

I know few details about the Tintin canon ... but moving a name is easy and so is making a seaport. Just have to know where ...

And is Douma Syldavian or Bordurian?
