Multi-Module campaigns
« on: January 29, 2022, 08:50:11 PM »

So, as the title says, this is a question related to campaigns spanning multiple modules in BAT.

If, say, I wanted to combine the two USMC career campaigns, so that it was one 1943-68 campaign, that I'd switch from WAW to JTW when I get to the first JTW mission, would that work, or would there be an issue that I'm not thinking of that'd prevent it from working properly? I tried loading up the first mission of the JTW part in WAW, and it seemed to work just fine (flew it all the way through), so there shouldn't be a error due to the next mission not loading.

Again, the only reason I can see this not working is if there's some hidden record of kills that records the java slot of the aircraft/ground unit in the campaign stats, which would cause a problem as a lot of the WAW planes/ground units are not going to be present in JTW.

If there's a definitive answer, I'd love to know, otherwise I might end up giving it a go, just to see what happens.

It is per-se no problem to have an era module switch necessary within a campaign.  The game stores only one version of the progress (it was initially not built for multi era modules anyway ;) )

Simply finishing the last mission in WAW and then going to the briefing of a next mission supped to be played in JTW does not break anything.

It just needs to be pointed out loud and clear for the player: What to do, when to do it and the absolute necessity to do it.

If you ask me, I would create this breaking point with a mission that will instantly crash if played in the wrong era module. (missing plane or loadout does that, simply place a jet somewhere off the map and that's it. Explode on spawn in WAW - the proverbial whack over the head for everybody who does not read the briefing ;) )

There are mission that may play in JTW as well, but that can lead to false assumptions that it's okay to continue this when actually half the objects or chiefs will be missing and sooner or later the crash will come.

Or maybe the switch can be indicated by a little closure video ? I mean... after the last mission in the WAW module, a video is plaid, saying something like "WW2 has come to an end, but the adventures of Mr X will continue after... please, load next mission in JTW module" ? More sympathic than making the game crash on purpose, no ???

The reason I ask is because I'm planning to eventually play through the USMC career campaign, and the idea of it being one continuous campaign recording all kills/scores into one outcome instead of playing both separately.

As far as the "switch" goes, I made a separate version of the campaign that has both versions combined, with an addition to the bottom of the first mission of the JTW portion telling the player to switch from WAW to JTW in order to continue.

It's sounding like that should work, if I'm understanding VP right, which is cool to hear.
