The Fiat G50bis Freccia fought gallantly from the Spanish Civil War in 1938 then alongside the MC200 through 1940 to 1942 in the Mediterranean Theatre. It also made a brief appearance in the Battle of Britain. Part 8 of our Fire over Sicily campaign cover.

By 1943 the G50 was showing its age as faster and more powerful opponents were met. No longer an aggressive day fighter, and due to a lack of aircraft numbers overall, the Italian Air Force converted two CR42 units into G50bis fighter-bomber units in anticipation of the coming invasion. Around 70 G50bis were supplied to 158 and 159 Gruppi Assalto. They made several sorties against shipping and road convoys but with their small payloads and need for heavy escorts they had minimal impact on events. After a month of combat most were wiped out in bombing raids, including a devastating attack on the 13th July when 28 were destroyed on the ground and only 7 managed to get airborne!
I found only 6 actual combats involving G50bis for the period covered so have added 4 more ‘possibles’ for your enjoyment. I hope you survive!
InstallationThis campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack. It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.
Extract the FOS_G50.zip file to a temporary directory.
• Copy the decompressed Missions folder and the decompressed PaintSchemes folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder.
• In the New Pilot Career page, choose Regia Aeronautica in the Air Force selection drop-down. Choose Fire over Sicily Part 8: The G50bis Freccia in the Career drop-down.
• We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
• The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.
