hotfix 02 WIP - .properties question
« on: February 06, 2022, 01:36:52 AM »

I am planning on releasing another hotfix patch (02) for the current BAT with some additional fixes and small upgrades of stuff I've done since.

As the Hotfix should be minimally invasive, as to not touch any of your maybe modded .ini files  (in contrast to a full update), I was wondering if I should include two .properties fixes.

I have correct a few misleading spelling errors in weapons.properties, along with some additional loadout entries and I also would like to include the freshly reworked regiments names by Venator77

any opinions from outside my bubble on this?

From a purely selfish point of view, Andy, I would prefer weapons.properties as a separate file rather than part of the fix. I have a heavily-modded file, mainly tobias' loadout updates on multiple aircraft. It would be easier for me to do an external 'file compare' then amend my existing file that way.

BAT has always been a one-stop-solution.
As such, anything should be included in the patch with no additionally required steps whatsoever.
If someone's modding a game like chradbury did, then this person should be able to backup his modded files and folder on his own and bring 'em back in place and/or merge them with updated content on his own behalf.
We can't let 99.99% of users suffer just to please the 0.01% who decided to have a go at BAT on their own behalf.

Just my $0.02.

exactly my leaning at this point, it is just the basic question if to include a .properties into my hotfix logic or not at all and reserve it for a full update

BAT Hotfix: immediate bug fixes/upgrades with no impact on installed mods or game relevant ini files (unless there's a specific severe bug to fix)

Technically, a .properties is a cosmetics file with no functional impact on the game at all. The ini files are doing that. So it is either in or out. And if it's out, it will only come with the next third digit update.

Update third degree - x.x.1  third digit counter increase, includes new content and therefore must contain new ini files too. It includes all previous hotfixes, of course.

Update second degree - x.1 second digit counter updates include basic function upgrades and/or full out changes to Engine Mod or other core functions. They can be a repack of several third digit updates to streamline installation processes.

Update first degree 5.0 - First digit counter update is a full repack/redo of everything.

Agreed, Mike. That's why I said 'from a 'purely selfish point of view'  :)

How close are we to a third or second degree update? If it's fairly close, then the hotfixes should be packed with the update itself.

Whatever Andy decides, my humble opinion is, it will be good.

Just by knowing the content, the proposal. Thanks for the work

Best wishes
