How to make map textures?
« on: February 09, 2022, 12:39:35 AM »

I was planning on making some textures to put on a map, but I'm not sure how I should go about doing this. I'm mostly interested in the technical aspects of doing this - how to format the image correctly, etc.

Hello Uzin,

very helpful!

I've never built a map, but maybe I'll try it in the near future.

Thank you for this link.

@ marcost:

Of course I have Carsmaster's 4096.dll's in my B.A.T. #WAW3...!  ;)

With greetings from (near) Cologne

I was planning on making some textures to put on a map, but I'm not sure how I should go about doing this. I'm mostly interested in the technical aspects of doing this - how to format the image correctly, etc.

The best resource for making textures starts with Google Earth. I usually surf around and look for areas that have good hi rez imagery and then start to make screencaps. These I save and later edit with a graphics editor into appropriately sized textures, usually now at 2048x2048 size.

With a 4k monitor you can make decent looking 2048x2048 textures. Obviously the textures must be saved as a .tga file and also made tileable, meaning they have to blend together without obvious borders. And after that you would normally have to see that the various color palettes of the textures you use in one and the same map, go together and blend well enough, otherwise you will get unnatural looking blotches of clashing colors on a map.
