Of course the AI isn't able to slow down or speed up to close the gaps between the flights.

Just use the taxi to take off feature to delay all the aircraft starting to taxi out long enough for all aircraft to startup.

In real life they wouldn't just fire up the engine and taxi 30seconds later, they would sit there for a while running while the engines warmed up and crew did checks.

The biggest problem here is getting all bombers to form up...

That is about impossible... ]banghead[

Even if you start them all in the air, arrange them in perfect formations, painstakenly sinking everyting in timing and speeds the bombers will just reorganize them selves in to a long line.  And if the flight has a turn, you're fucked.

Something linking flights together in a formation would be nice, like a "form up with" target.

Wing Walker;
sorry but it's not impossible although it is pretty frikkin' hard.  Using the 'SET' command helps a lot by linking flights of four to each other.  It's certainly not perfect but you can get pretty close...

Again, this is all predicated on timing and in HSFX the Big Bird campaign works quite well.  Our little online group flew a coop version and it went OK.  Yes the formation was sometimes strung out a bit but again it was usually due to flights not arriving at the RV on time and that is when engine starts aren't an issue so random engine starts/restarts essentially throw everything out the window unless you go through the chore of orbitting (as in real life) until everyone forms up.

One other issue I've noticed is if the lead plane of a flight get shot down the remainder tend to get stupid and seem to forget how to fly and navigate, LOL.

Taxiing doesn't really make it better in my eyes as here the planes start as soon as they rolled to the runway, so if you have different flights starting from the same airfield they can get mixed up because the planes from flight 1 get planes from flight 2 in between and so the gap between the flights itself can get huge. Planes like the B-17 or B-24  also have a hard time to catch up with their flights if the single planes are too far away from each other (even happens with lined up take off sometimes). I experienced this problem of taxiing in a Japan Bombing Campaign. The B-24 weren't able to catch up to their flights after taxiing and taking off - only the B-29 as they can fly way faster. At least that are my experiences with AI, taxiing and random engine failure.

For what it's worth Kingle92, I've experimented with cutting the speed of the lead flight of bombers for a couple of the initial waypoints.  It seemed to help with the following flights so they could catch up but I didn't do enough experimenting to say that it's a solid consistent solution.

Yes, would be possible too, but as I said I like to play the camapaigns like they were meant to be (+ very time consuming and laborious to change everything manually). Maybe we will get an option/mod someday otherwise it is what is....one of my most favorite games (with and thanks to BAT of course!)
