Supermarine had proposed twin engine fighter design in 1937 and even built a mock up, the Type 327. However this was never taken forward.
With a designed top speed of 465 mph at 22,000 ft. and would have made an impressive fighter/interceptor  - especially when compared to the Whirlwind.

It is not a huge leap of the imagination to envisage a design that, if adopted,  could easily have been influenced by the development of the Spitfire, possibly even manufactured alongside existing Spitfire production and utilizing a high proportion of common structural and mechanical components. With it's larger wing area, increased fuselage length and two Merlin 25M engines driving 4-bladed, slightly reduced radius propellers , the design would also incorporate a bubble canopy and a larger vertical tail surface to improve stability - alongside an increased wheel base to aid ground handling.
