Third Afghanistan-British India War, May 6-August 8, 1919
An Afghan army of about 50,000 men, supported by 120,000 other border tribes, invaded British India on four fronts from Dakka to the Kyber Rifles base at Landi Kotal and the Khyber Pass, from Khost towards Kurram and Waziristan, from Spin Baldak to Quetta in Baluchistan and minor operations in Chitral.
I Mission : On 24 May, Captain R. Halley of the Royal Air Force performed a notable feat, bombing the
Emir's palace and a munitions factory in Kabul. This demonstration, which made it clear that the capital was
within reach of British aviation, made a deep impression.
"Jock Halley blew up the walls of the Royal Harem and started the fashion for women's emancipation in Afghanistan!"
II Mission : On 13 May, the RAF attacked an Afghan army concentration at Dakka, ten miles northwest of Landi Kotal, where 1½ tons of bombs and 1151 machine gun shells caused 600 casualties, including the commander, a tribal malik and a mullah, forcing the Afghans to: "evacuate the camp and retreat hastily towards Jalalabad. The Mohmands on the left bank of Kabul looted and carried away whatever they could get their hands on.
