Good Value Joystick for IL-2
« on: April 28, 2022, 10:26:15 AM »

What is a good value Joystick to buy for IL-2 1946?

What is one that also has a good 'HOTAS' control option on the stick as well.

AV8R

It has 2 "throttle" type levers on it and 4 toggle switches, trigger, 4 thumb buttons, a hat switch, 1 large selector switch.  It is also configured more like a WW2 aircraft stick.

There are different versions.

Though, I pair it with the x52 throttle control (I don't like the X52 flight stick).

ALSO...
Once you go rudder peddles you never got back.

I sad that I never had them in the hay day of my IL2 experiences online.

What difference do rudder pedals make, how long do they take to get used to and what are some good value (not too expensive) ones to get?

Over the years I wonder if I haven't tried at least 10 or more different joysticks.

I finally have a very good model. The Saitek X52. It is joystick combination thrust control stick, but with a multitude of easily accessible buttons and sliders.

https://www.coolblue.be/fr/produit/99526/saitek-flight-simulation-x52-pro.html?cmt=c_a%2Ccid_15795733591%2Caid_134873920507%2Ctid_pla-297541869836%2Cgn_g%2Cd_c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwma6TBhDIARIsAOKuANwxOPK8NbREj0i_-ptIGNrVGOw8iLtl2-wpOh7EX1jmInTJ84mul-0aArNgEALw_wcB

Perhaps on the higher end of the price range, but worth it compared to some of the easily broken and quite frankly dinky joysticks I've tried over the years.

What difference do rudder pedals make
It's a world of a difference.
Comparable to TIR.

how long do they take to get used to
Half a day for me. YMMV

what are some good value (not too expensive) ones to get?
Impossible to answer IMHO.
I know there are people who manage to get used to cheap ones (Logitech and such kind of stuff).
I've tried and preferred to gift them to someone else rather than letting them spoil the fun for me.
Grabbed me these instead and can't think of having used any other since: https://mfg-sim.com/hr/pedale/51-mfg-crosswind-v3-graphite.html

I recently sold my MS Sidewinder FF 2 joystick and CH Pro Throttle https://www.ebay.com/itm/304343174577 which I had in place for YEARS...used for more than a decade. It never let me down and was good for a "casual" gamer like myself, even with the rudder control in the twist-stick.

I upgraded to a Logitech G940 (Stick/throttle/pedals), and man it is quite the setup. Out of production for a LONG time, but I found one on fleabay in good shape and took the plunge. Worth the $ as far as I'm concerned, and very configurable. The pedals change everything, the same way the CH Pro throttle made formation flying way easier.

Hello resistor,

why did you do that?

Never I would sell my beloved FF2, the best stick ever for fly with propeller aircrafts!

The FF2 stick have only one handicap, the power supply cable.

Il-2 Sturmovik with FF2 stick, a keyboard with enough programmable extra-keys, pedals and TrackIR (for sure) brings the perfect feeling for PC-flying.

Btw: My Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 stick works completely perfect since eighteen years!

I'm so sad about the decision from Microsoft to give up the heads up to keyboard, mouse and other stuff for good game playing.

Best regards

Just get them, you won't regret it.  I regret being so cheap and not getting them when online play was active.

They are a lot better way to control the rudder, they are easy to get used to.

The only problem I've had is remembering to give some rudder when lining up shots since I have been flying for more than a decade not lining up very well.

When you slide your angle into the same as your target its a game changer.

They make small adjustments to your path easy.  In the past I would play with trim all the time while twisting the stick.  Now I set a general trim for level flight and use pedals for anything above or below that.

Mine are Logitech "Pro Flight Rudder Pedals"

The only thing I had to do is have something to push them against. I laid down a board against the feet of my desk.

There are also holes in the base that you could use to tie off to something, or screw into a board.
