FOV Modification for Triples or any widescreens (SOLVED)
« on: September 27, 2022, 08:14:55 AM »

HSFX RELATED - If I use anything but my native resolution (Nvidia Surround) of 7680x1440 the mouse is not functional. At full res all is fine but the cockpit is about 30% too large even with the highest FOV (using Inc/Dec FOV buttons) possible. Any way to get this to look close to RL size? I have tried many different conf.ini settings, most just mess everything up (like SaveAspect=0 set to "1" locks it to my center screen but at what I think is ~1600×1200), no bueno.

EDIT - As this thread (originally for HSFX in 2022) has been combined with similar issues I had with a 2023 install of Ultrapak 3.4 I want to make it clear UP 3.4 "Cassie"\Patch 2 FOV issues are SOLVED by installing Hotfix 18. No need to add any Mods or do anything else. I can not speak for HSFX, and that's another area of this Forum..

THANK YOU SAS!!!

Try 1920x1080 Resolution.

Or 1600x900, Maybe Just in case.

To me, even running 1 screen at 2560x1440 the FOV is too low. I can run in 2560x1440 in a moveable window and place it on my center screen but even with that I find the FOV too small. All I want is to increase the FOV from the current max ~90 to about 120..

I use a mod that supports higher FoVs, and have settled on 105 degrees as the widest that still looks reasonable. 120 degrees reveals pretty bad gnomonic distortion and more strongly makes visible any external model gaps still present for a number of planes. The mod I use is Storbror's smooth zoom, with some small code tweaks of my own.

To me, a triple screen setup, where the lot are treated as one display, is a horrible approach for a combat sim. The view is what I call a 'tank slit, which is OK for sedate and violence-free civvie sims. But in air combat, a good vertical FoV is crucial. And a 'tank slit' of even a 120 degree horizontal FoV suffers a terribly small vertical FoV of less than 30 degrees.

Using TIR so I don't really suffer from the "tank slit" issue... or at least I don't think so. Does this mod work with 4.12.2 and HSFX 7.03? I just downloaded your file but in the Readme it talks about the [MODS] section in conf.ini, and there is no MODS section in my conf.ini.. is this a version issue?

Should be compatible with 4.12.2, I think (as I write on my phone from bed  ;)  ).

Create a [Mods] section and try it out... Adding any new text, even if not supported, will do no harm. The classes reading conf.ini are looking for specific entries; 'strange stuff' is ignored if not relevant.

While a head tracker is a boon, it isn't a complete panacea. By losing a good amount of vertical field, you can miss something that a more standard screen aspect ratio would reveal. And you are forced to pan vertically more frequently in order to cover the missing view area.

I really need a step-by-step guide of what to put where so I know it's not the mod that is not working, i.e I can create a [MODS] section in conf.ini easily enough, but what goes there? Also, for HSFX 7.03, do you use JSGME or create a separate "Mods" folder under 1946 for the FOV mod? There is already a IL 2 Sturmovik 1946\jsgmemods folder with all the HSFX mods? Also, the oem FOVMod_animated contains two files 19EF8DC806613AE4 and E5D3C09810641348, where do these (or the entire "FOVMod_animated" folder go?

Here's a screenshot showing where This FoV mod goes in BAT. Use whatever is the folder mods go into for your HSFX7 game. (Which I've never had, and I also do not use JSGME.)

I've named the mod "!0  FOV_5-105_SmoothZoom" to suit my own tweaking of the Java. You can name any mod whatever you like, by the way. The class files (those funny looking, 16-character hexadecimal names) must reside in the mod's own root folder.)

Here's the relevant part of my conf.ini, showing the three "FOV" related entries (at the bottom here) to place in the [Mods] section.

Code: [Select]
[Mods]
RandomSplash=1
netCallsign=

LightFlakIllumination=1
HeavyFlakIllumination=1

TracersPlayer=500
TracersAircrafts=300
TracersWorld=300
TracersWirbelwind=200
TracersLength=1.0

;PALNoTracers=0
;PALNoSmoketrails=0
;PALSmoketrailsNight=-6  // Sun elev. deg. for switching to night tracer smokes
PALNoTracers=0
PALNoSmoketrails=0
PALSmoketrailsNight=-6

timeMaxMultiplier = 256
timeMaxDivider = 32

FOVLog=0
FOVDefault=105
FOVSpeed=100

Thx @WxTech - i'll try and get it working in HSFX 7.03 but also have a clean 1946 4.12.2 install so i'm downloading BAT 4.0 to check it out.. I will report back when I get into it..

This is what a 7.03 install looks like, all mods are done by JGSME and stored in the jsgmemods folder as shown below that. Also, where are the control setup files stored? I would like to save them once all set up and I can't seem to find them. In IL-2 Box there is a data/input folder.

Control setup files? When it comes to JSGME, I'm not the one to ask.  ;)  I hope someone familiar with this scheme chimes in. I prefer to have full manual control of mod handling, but it does require to stay sharp and on the ball, lest a cock-up result.

I note that Steam has put your game into the Program Files folder. As far I can gather, it's highly recommended to put Il-2 into the drive's root. As in, C:/IL-2 1946/.

HSFX Related - Did find out, save the "Users" folder for programmed controls/key bindings. I like JSGME as you can easily reverse a mod, but to get this particular FOV mod to work i'll do what I need to..

Edit: Got the FOV mod to work in HSFX 7.03. Had to create a [MODS] section in Conf.ini with FOV=120 and then a "MODS" folder under the IL-2 root, dropped the FOVMod folder into it, and now I can set it to my preference using the Inc/Dec FOV key in game..

FOV Modification for Triples or any widescreens (SOLVED)
« Reply #11 on: May 28, 2023, 11:06:20 AM »

ULTRAPAK 3.4 "Cassie" Related - I have IL2 1946 ver. 4.12.2 (Steam), UP 3.4 Cassie, the Patch #2, and the Hotfix 17 installed. All controllers are seen and work perfectly, no conflict with the number of controllers (I have 7), thank you to whoever fixed that! Set my resolution in conf.ini (7560x1440) and it is correct in-game. Only issue I have now is the FOV being far too small. I've followed old 2011 posts here for the FOV Mod and have 1. Created a "MODS" category in conf.ini and placed FOV=120 under it, saved. 2. Created a MODS folder under my IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder and placed the "FOVMod" folder from the "FOVMod_v1.1_..7z" file in it, which contains one file named "19EF8DC806613AE4". I have a switch assigned to FOV Increase\Decrease, which works, but when I start the sim the FOV is still far too small, meaning it is not reading the conf.ini or the FOVMod is not working. Anyone see something i'm missing, or maybe there is a newer FOV mod i'm not finding?

EDIT: SOLVED - Install Ultrapak 3.4 "Cassie" over a clean 1946 4.12.2, Add Patch #2, add Hotfix 18, and your FOV issues should be over! No need to add any Mods!
