I remember going to Woolworths or the little hobby shop or WH Smith's in downtown Redcar and drooling over models I wanted but couldn't afford.
It didn't help watching 'new' movies such as 633 Squadron, Battle of Britain and Where Eagles Dare at the cinema near the Woolworth's.  We could get bags of busted cookies at reduced prices prior to going to the cinema LOL  I did eventually get one of the Dinky Battle of Britain Spitfires and thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

The local Woolies used to sell individual Airfix 1/32 figures like pick'n'mix sweets. Had to get there early on a saturday or all the officers would be gone.  ;D

I had a few of the 1/32 plastic figure sets at various times and of course the little HO-OO boxes of figures too.

Along the same lines, do you remember the Marx military figures,  about 6 inches tall.  Same idea as the Airfix 1/32 plastic soldiers but bigger.  I only ever had one or two at a time.

Not many Marx figures, but I've got hazy recollections of Timpo. I seem to remember some were multi-coloured plastic that could be pulled apart and swapped around, and some came painted. Most of my collection was Wild West.

The Airfix Tiger reminded me of distant days when the kid with the latest Airfix catalogue suddenly became the most popular kid in the class.

Ah yes, Timpo.  Lots of Wild West figures and I had a fort at one point although we used to do a lot swapping (US = 'trading') back then.
I had a bunch of knights too but I think they were Britains with metal bases but essentially more detailed versions of the Timpo concept.

I was at a toy show in a local hotel a few years back and was shocked at some of the prices of now 'collector's' items and which we took for granted as kids.

And then you brought your first Tamiya kit... and the world changed.

How true.  Tamiya became my go-to modelling company.  I used to avidly read any article about Francois Verlinden and how he did things.  I did an excellent Tamiya 1:35 M16 Halftrack (Quad .50cal) back in the '80s right down to creating empty shell casings in the bed.  Sadly I got rid of it when I got married and have regretted it ever since as it was probably the pinnacle of my modelling skills back then.

Just discovered this wonderful Airfix (and others) nostalgia thread on a modelling site...

Enjoy - but let your next of kin know you might be missing for some time   ;)
