I often find that I can end up overlooking message notifications for some time, due to the easily missed, same-color, "[1]" characters that are appended. This has no chance of readily catching one's eye. If these characters were at least a different color, like red, say, that would help much. Make it flash, so much the better! And the tiny font is another contributor to overlooking, although this probably is necessary for smaller device screens.

Is this a difficult-to-customize element?

I get a pop-up telling me I have a new message which is impossible to miss.
Email notification is also enabled.
I can't remember if I get the pop-up on my tablet though, so a different colour would be better.

Hmmm... Looks like I might need to look at notification options. You young whippersnappers are so much more in tune with this stuff.

Profile -> Personal Messaging -> tick "Show a popup when I receive new messages." -> Click "Change Profile" to confirm.
