Hello WxTech,

if you are flying with an Nvidia graphics card, please note that the "Vertical Sync" setting gives better results with fast movements "On".

Best regards

I did a lot of testing when first getting the then new computer all tuned up for the game, and found that vsync set to Fast seemed better than simply On. I'll play around with this some more...

Mike,
My monitor is neither G-Sync nor Freesync.

I've never looked online into the issue with TrackIR, and was fascinated to find some other folk who had theorized along similar lines. The seeming dependence on frame rates as multiples of 60 for more than one user is certainly suggestive of something...

In the earlier days with this computer (with which TrackIR was used by me for the first time), I battled with really severe bouts of the 30/sec TIR update rate on and off. Nothing fundamental has changed since, except the Nvidia Control Panel fiddlings. At least now the little hiccups are minor and only occasional, occurring, it seems, only when FPS goes below 60.

My monitor is neither G-Sync nor Freesync.
As such, it can only provide frames at even fractions of the own refresh rate, i.e. a 60 Hz Monitor will provide refresh rates of 60, 30, 15, ... Hz.
TrackIR 5 generally updates at 120Hz, but the game engine of IL-2 can't process the incoming TrackIR data until it get's rid of the last rendered frame - mind you IL-2 is strictly single threaded, there's no thread separation between render and any other part of the game.

I gather, then, that my 144 Hz job is quantized to 72, 36 and 18? I'd never even considered that possibility. So, instead of locking my GPU at 60 (62), should I set it to 72 (74)?

144Hz without G-Sync... oh well... that's a first-person-shooter monitor, just saying.
The best advice I can give is to pick a full fraction of the monitor's refresh rate - in your case 144, 72, 36, 18, ... then take the one your PC can actually deliver (usually), then subtract a few Hz, i.e. 140, 69, 34, 17, ... and use that as the capped frame rate.
Other than that, dive into "adaptive V-Sync" (I guess your GPU should provide that feature) and triple buffering, both might yield better results in smoothening output vs. avoiding screen tearing for non G-Sync setups like yours.

Mike,
Thanks for the further insights. A very knowledgeable friend helped (actually, I was essentially a spectator  ;) ) build my current PC. I can understand why he recommended my monitor, with economy as a factor in mind, as a twitch-shooter himself. The cost of a sizeable G-sync screen would have subtracted elsewhere from the performance I was seeking within my set budget.

I just went through a serials of trials, trying the various sync modes (which include adaptive and adaptive-half refresh) and with/without different frame rate limits. It turns out that for me, Fast vsync with a frame rate cap set to 62 is the best. With the other settings I would get one or both of tearing and cyclical, brief stutters. I'm sure further refinement might net a wee bit more out of it, but this is eminently satisfactory. As I mentioned, a good part of the reason for my liking a frame rate limit is a more consistent zoom rate with your mod.

Hi mates!

I have done some testing with your settings while testing the last BAT 4.3 with some WxTech mods installed and compared it with my starting fps test....the configuration is strictly the same as both of you have indicated in the initial posts , apart Antialiasing Transparency which is set to Multisampling due the consideration in post 7 bt WxTech....

2024-12-24 18:09:41 - VSync ON @ 60 - BAT 4.3 MODDED long distance in km: 14 8 30 30 (My NVidia settings*)
Frames: 9161 - Time: 155593ms - Avg: 58.878 - Min: 40 - Max: 61

2025-01-09 21:01:36 - VSync ON @ 60 - BAT 4.3 MODDED long distance in km: 14 8 30 30 (WxTech NVidia settings)
Frames: 8957 - Time: 152985ms - Avg: 58.548 - Min: 38 - Max: 61

2025-01-09 21:11:05 - VSync ON @ 60 - BAT 4.3 MODDED long distance in km: 14 8 30 30 (Storebror NVidia settings)
Frames: 9071 - Time: 155344ms - Avg: 58.393 - Min: 42 - Max: 61

(My NVidia settings i5 12600kf not overclocked - NVidia GTX1060 Super)

The only doubt I have is about:

Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias

Because NVidia suggestion is to set it CLAMP when Anisotropic Filtering is enabled....and in the settings is set to 16x....

EDIT

I have tried the NVidia data and got a decrease in fps....

2025-01-09 21:52:43 - VSync ON @ 60 - BAT 4.3 MODDED long distance in km: 14 8 30 30 (Storebror NVidia settings with Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias set to CLAMP)
Frames: 9057 - Time: 155281ms - Avg: 58.327 - Min: 37 - Max: 61

Thank you for the suggestions and performance tests! I will check them.
