P47 Tail wagging, uncontrollable shaking when shooting.
« on: February 10, 2023, 07:21:08 PM »

When I fly P47 bubble canopy versions (mainly D30, D40) they wiggle left ro right uncontrollably when shooting, croshairs are flying side to side like 5° I'm not able to keep reticle on Me 323 from 200 meters.
I've also noticed slight tail wagging during normal flight.
Razorbacks don't do it.
Is it a bug or normal? How to fix it?

I think this is a consequence of the guns firing out of sequence, the differential recoil inducing this ridiculously excessive yaw. If this is the underlying cause, then it's silly because the jackhammering from the guns on both sides will average out nicely. There could be no time interval which could permit a different yaw moment on one side versus the other.

As to a fix, I seem to recall something having been done years ago. But I'm heavily early war and Pacific leaning, and haven't been keeping up with issues impacting the later war stuff.

From memory this effect was introduced in the Jugs Reloaded Pack. The excessive yaw does make it challenging to get your guns on the target! At one stage in an earlier iteration of the game I resolved the problem by removing the Pack, but I cant remember the details, and I'm not sure whether you can do that now in BAT given the .SFS file structure? Anyway, I avoid the bubble canopy versions and stick with the razorbacks.

If a real combat aircraft behaved so abysmally it would be immediately rejected for service. Such an.unstable gun platform would be worthless, except perhaps for area effect ground spraying.

The effect introduced here might arise if the L and R sets of guns were firing in turn, for 1/2 to 1 second at a time. That is, only the L guns fire for a bit, then stop, to have the R guns only have their turn for a burst, and so on in this alternating fashion. If there is anything like a simultaneous firing, the guns' cyclic RoF is far too rapid to set up such a far slower oscillation. The harmonic frequencies are far too out of phase.

The discussion has been there before: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,67356.msg736395.html#msg736395
What you witness is already the toned down version of the tail sway which was introduced three years ago: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,61652.msg696073.html#msg696073

Complain about the excessive sway when firing guns as much as you want, but that exactly was the reason for pilots to complain about the early (non-fin) bubbletop Jug versions and this precisely was the reason for Republic to introduce the tail fin.
Yes, it is excessive. If it wasn't, nobody would have changed anything back in the days of WW2.

Thank you, everyone, for replies.
So it is a feature, not a bug, unfortunately.
I'm not complaining, I'm only surprised, because this behavior is not present in any other simulators I've seen.

Most recent simulators have probably more glamorous graphic features than the old IL-2 1946 , but when you look under the hood , they are perhaps not so accurate when it comes to flight behavior .
However, I don't say that Il-2 1946 is perfect .
A simulator that I find astonishing is X-plane , because it calculates the flight model of a plane using the data of its 3D .
Could something like that be imported to IL-2 1946 ?

That would be catastrophic!
Given the 3D quality of some/numerous planes, it would be impossible to take off!  :D   :D   :D
