Afghanistan - true elevation of airfields.
« on: February 13, 2023, 06:51:28 PM »

As it was noticed by Bison_M, the elevation of airfields  at the Afghnistan 1979-1989 map is unrealistically low. In order to improve it, the map_H.tga was corrected in Gimp/Layers/Colours/Curves . This correction made it necessary to adjust river valeys in mountainous areas of the map. Reworked version of the map including  further fine tuning was tested on Il2 4. 122 SAS 5.30 and BAT 4.1 . It may be downloaded here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/8uq9ngw2s5hghfq/Afghanistan_R.7z/file

Patch 1:

It can be d/l here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/1ecw02plmps7bcr/Afghanistan_R_Patch_1.7z/file

Just unpack, then  replace the folder Afghanistan_R.
Number of named cities increased from 82 to 132.
Several formerly missing bridge objects added.
State boundaries, rivers and roads corrected, some river names added.
Airfields tried to better suited to AI and autopilot take of and landing.

Tested in BAT 4.2.2 hf 4

The only object that need to be added to static.ini is:

[buildings.House$IBuildBlock]
Title India_Building_Block
MeshLive        3do/Buildings/Mideast/JBuildBlockIndia/live.sim
MeshDead        3do/Buildings/Mideast/BuildBlock/dead.sim
AlignToLand     0
Body            RockMiddle
Panzer          0.10

I have set a dedicated Afghanistan_R title...

The new height are very good and give the feel of this harsh country....

Thanks for the development!

The object you indicate is present both in static.ini and in 3do of the Afghanistan_R package.
Just tested again and the object was found there .

Hi Uzin!

Sorry , I explain me wrong....there isn't any missing object in your static.ini!

What I mean is to point that in BAT we have a different organization inside static.ini....

The object entries have a different order and this could be confusing for other users because they find the 'add to all.ini' but not the 'add to static.ini'....and so they could think to add all them and have doubled entries...or swap the file and have different order....

I have checked the difference between your and BAT and I identify as the only missing object between your static.ini and BAT static.ini the one I pasted in my post....so in BAT to have the map saving missions is only that single object entry that has to be added....a 'add to BAT static.ini'....

I hope to have been more undestandable now....

This is why, instead of enclosing a full static.ini file, it is better to have a short txt file with just the lines of the objects to add.

I insist on the opposite:
adding part of file is viable only when you know what the former file contains . But it depends on both the Il2 version and the history of installation.
So when old file is backupped and complete new file is given, the user can, by using universal static ini checking, found the addition necessary particularly for his file state - iside the new file.
Remember, there are various several versions and installation histories of Il2 among the users. No version is compulsory.

Thanks for this Afghanistan map update! ]thumleft[
The map was well installed, taking into account the versions installed earlier.
The elevation of the airfields almost completely corresponds to the real one!
Conducted a short test at the Kabul airfield in my game 4122m+SASMODACT 5.3+Jet era 1.33+SAS engine mod, for AH-1, F-16, F-18, C-130, C-135, An-26, MiG-21-23, Su-17-25 in AI mode - everything is fine, everything craft take off and land at maximum payload!

Thank you for this titanic work and I hope for the continuation of work to improve the runways, parking and taxways at some airfields.

With respect! 8)

Yes you're right....

I was only pointing this single object for BAT because it is used also by users less skilled in adding stuff and they , maybe , can helped by less testing/copy/pasting work....
