My guess is that the hatch didn't open and there was only a bullet hole in the front (upper) of the fuselage through which the upward-pointing machine gun bullets came out.

This Is a reasonable hypothesis. But on drawings i see hatchs.
However, this doubt will remain unknown  :)

It looks marvelous and outstanding！
From what I knew，though she had two prototypes and completed，the S1A Denko never had a chance
to touch the sky before the airraids……But today，by the efforts from all of you，she finally could fly in the blue windy sky！
