Any way to make flak more accurate at night?
« on: March 24, 2023, 03:12:34 AM »

Currently making a C-47 D-Day mission so I've got loads of aircraft going into flak at low level - searchlights don't really track when you're that low so the aaa is pretty much blind... anyone know of any ways of fixing this? The flak intensity during the daytime is pretty much how I like it so if there was a way to have daytime flak behaviour at night that would work great :)

Probably? A lot of C-47s were hit by flak during the initial drops and at the moment none of mine are being hit at all. Besides I'm not entirely concerned with historical accuracy, i might make a realistic version and a more 'cinematic' one

Hello CallMeKatie,

if you want to kill the C-47 simply place more flak and searchlights on the flight path of the aircraft you want to kill.

Regarding the question of realism , it depends on whether the AAA Batteries
in question were optically aimed or had radar assistance.
Radar was new in WW2 , and at the outset most AAA was optically aimed.
During the conflict , more and more radar guidance was used for aiming
ordnance in AAA and other applications.
Don't know if the newer versions of IL2 Mods have adapted radar guided
ordinance firing , but I doubt it.
Bomberkiller is on the money in terms of night shooting - use well placed
searchlights. Lots of them .
I don't know of any way to improve AAA activity in daylight poor visibility
conditions , but perhaps this reflects the reality for most of WW2.

BK's suggestion is a good one. Also try raising the skill level of the flak guns if you haven't already. Their default skill is Average. Are you using the German 88mm gun? Mixing in the quad  barrel AA might help. And keep your C-47s low. I think parachute drop altitude was about 140 meters. Proximity to the flak will make the C47s more vulnerable.

Normal Drop in WW2 was ~600ft ( 183m ) at 90mph ( 145 kph)  -  according to google ).

Thanks for all your replies - I've managed to get the quad barrel 20mm AAA more accurate somehow but normal flak doesn't seem to be as accurate. Either way I'm happy with how its shaping up

You really wouldn't like it to be too accurate as it is years that we are struggling with sniper gunners
