Artificial Horizon for DH Mosquito Cockpit Reskin
« on: April 28, 2023, 09:08:42 AM »

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to reskin the cockpit instruments for the Mosquito, but I'm having trouble identifying the TGA file for the artificial horizon:

I know the frame of the instrument is represented in 01.tga, but I cannot find the TGA file for the moving horizon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Glibble

Dear Glibble

If possible , would you please consider adding an RAF 8 Day Clock which is absent in
current ingame Mosquito Models.
Here is where it is mounted in a B (Bomber) Version.

Here is where it is located inthe Fighter/NF Versions.

Hard to navigate without a good clock.
Mosquitos flew a long , long way.

Apparently it is about : STRELKA_GOR.msh
[Materials]
01 (.mat and .tga)
01_night (.mat and .tga)

Sorry Kopfdorfer, this is far beyond my abilities. I am no 3D modder. I'm barely a skinner that's all.

Ahh I see, so I assume the horizon lines are taken from a piece of white mark inside the 01.tga.
Too bad, c'est dommage, I'm not familiar with .msh files so I can't change it. :-|

I note that this instrument has, strangely, two of the fixed 'aircraft' reference posts. The moving horizon bar moves about between them. The normal arrangement has the horizon bar lying behind the fixed reference, and therefore the second such reference should be removed.

Another oddity is the reversal of a couple of elements. For such instruments having the bank angle scale on the bottom, the moving caret by which to read the angle should also be centered on the bottom. Here it's incorrectly at the top. And the fixed reference should have its support descend from above, and not ascend from below as here.

Other than that, what is desired to change? The earlier horizon bar was typically a double line, not the single line as later adopted.

I forgot to mention that I'm trying to re-skin the cockpit into a Japanese-ish look, for Dandolo's Q1W1 Tokai.
So instead of two white lines representing the horizon, I was hoping to change it to a moving sphere, typical of some IJN aircraft.
Below is a photoshop fixed image of what I want it to look like:

Originally I thought I just had to redraw the TGA file for the horizon bars, but now I realize it's more complicated.

Here is an actual Mossie Instrument Panel showing the Artificial Horizon.

Clearly showing only black and radium paint ( cream coloured ).
No other colours.

All these gyro horizons of that era did not have a rolling sphere behind the horizon bar. That surface was a section of a cylinder whose only permitted motion was rotating about the midpoint, on an axis perpendicular to the face of the gauge. If a horizontal line were to be painted upon that surface, as the plane banked that line would bank exactly like the horizon bar. But when the plane pitched up and down, unlike the vertically mobile horizon bar this painted like would not move up or down.

Now, it appears that the existing gauge here has no rotating mesh to represent this cylindrical section. (Even though the British unit did have such, like all others of this Sperry design.) If that's the case, you will have to create an additional mesh, supply the texture, incorporate the code to both define and rotate it in the cockpit class, and add the chunk to the cockpit hier.him.

Thanks for the input guys, but I decided to scrap the idea.
My goal was just a quick and dirty cockpit repaint.

Glibble ,
I hope you haven't taken my input the wrong way.
You are the guy doing the mod , if you want to do it a certain way
go for it.
My offerings are only sparked by the fact that you picked an airplane that I
love , and think was seminal to WW2 aviation , and I was excited by your
intent to improve it.
I am inclined to be historical whenever possible , so I fired off the cockpit photos.
Don't let offerings and suggestions that don't fit your vision dissuade you from
making your mod.
Many of us can't mod , so suggestions and ideas are all we can contribute to this
part of the journey.

Glibble ,
I hope you haven't taken my input the wrong way.

No worries, it's all good man.
I dropped the idea only because it involves editing the .msh file, which I have no clue.

Cheers,
