Author Topic: Heinkel Lerche RATO boosted, loadout enhanced, AI fix for AAM's  (Read 18246 times)

Heinkel Lerche always reminded me by it's advanced concept some spaceship or starfighter, but only with piston engine and propellers.
So once crazy idea came to my mind and I thought "what if"...
What if to attach to this "what if"  ::) ...craft really existed Walter RATO units as first stage of rocket to facilitate rocket-like climb to intercept altitude with increased payload.



Thus, was received some "Natter"-like hybrid, armed with homing X-4 or bomb-rockets as option (cannon ammo not reduced thro' RATO).



Boosters weight & drag rougly counted. Legacy loadouts still untouched, but new loadouts added:

3x bomb-rockets
3x bomb-rockets + 3x Walter RATO
3x X-4 homing
3x X-4 homing + 3x Walter RATO

UPDATE:
AI now is competent in using homing & guided AAM's. It will use it not only against bombers, but also against fighters, if fire solution exist.
Here I have to give a credit to Storebror for the idea how to make AI launch missiles from AC class.

update: general AI control over missiles improved and, as side effect,
           AI now have ability to attack ground/naval targets with X-4 in guided mode (whatever it have sense).

U must be careful in level flight with these boosters, which capable throw craft several km's high even if U shut the both engines.
Beware of overspeed.

The idea sounds great, it's kind of thinking the idea of the Lerche consequently to it's very end.

Lerche seems have bad performance at high altitude due to high wingload. Even high climb rate didn't help much, because propellers thrust at high altitude drops too, and as it almost wingless, it's in trouble. No rear view, diving speed not so high... I don't know, how good it would be as interceptor.
Basically, it is rather a flying SAM launcher. Due to its vertical position, there is not even need to take off to get some kills. Death to vulchers.

How to set "gunsight view" in that plane (full gunsight I mean)?
When I'm trying to switch-on this view (like I normally do Ctrl+F1) , there is re-direction into "landing view".

you can only switch between gunsight forward or landing view as only two options are available for the game.
because the revi is not offset like in a 109 for example it is no problem.

Twister, i like the rato idea, but I would even more like to have the choice.
is ist possible to make a simple x4 homing loadout without the RATO?

what I was also thinking about, what about a gunship option?
3x MK103 or 3x 20mm canon pod loadouts?

Hey Twister I have noticed something in your mods lately and I must ask you...

Could you make a separate download available that adds the flame on the rear of the X-4 missile? JUST that? It would be much appreciated.

If AI opponent armed with guided X4 - just don't fly stright. However, with homing X4 veteran & ace AI can be extremely dangerous up to 4-5 km's, for bombers - up to 7 - 10 km's.

Credits to Storebror for the idea how to make AI launch missiles from AC class.
As I discovered, this method also allows AI to "understand" difference between different missiles types and commit attacks accordingly.

Also in this update added 3x X-4 homing & 3x Wfr.Gr.21 weapon options w/o RATO with reduced cannons ammo.
