Piet's Cheetahs a SAAF campaign - a tribute to Piet
« on: May 27, 2023, 04:35:42 PM »

Von and Lars have sent the first part of a SAAF campaign to M4T for approval. This is our tribute to Piet for supporting our great sim over 20 plus years. A readme and outline will follow shortly.

Meanwhile Sgt Fresh has with his usual enthusiasm uploaded the first mission to Youtube.

See post 5 for full details of campaign of Piet's Cheetahs.

Maybe this is a silly question but if this is to honor Piet why don't you release it here at SAS where there is no need for an approval?

The campaign will be posted here, as have all of our campaigns. There's no intent to slight anyone, we just use M4T as a repository as many campaign builders do (Poltava is a notable example). Post will be available in a moment.

Background and History by Lars
Von and I have several upcoming campaigns, among which is a South African Air Force campaign covering 1940 to 1945. In view of Piet passing away recently we decided to move this to the head of the list. Amazingly, the man made it to his birthday, then played a music concert when the doctors said it was not possible.

So many of us have been touched by this horrible disease but the human endeavour can be stronger when given support of family and friends.

There have been many worthy people who have supported our brilliant sim over the years. Many have passed on, one way or another. Piet has been with us from the start so it is fitting to honour his countrymen’s contribution to winning the war. I understand one in seven aircraft in the Mediterranean were South African and all crew were volunteers.

The SAS community has responded to help create this with its usual enthusiasm. Whiskey Sierra had created the medals and promotions and Hayate has created many new relevant skins.

I have investigated recent AI converters with a goal of creating a SAAF speech pack but had limited luck so far. Marcost has been excellent help steering me through the Audacity programme and how the Il2 1946 speech packs work. We may get away with an English South African ground controller but the main speech from aircrew will have to be RAF GB for now.

The first issue of 25 missions covers the operations in Northern Kenya against the Italian Air Force. A few airmen covered an area larger than France, so were spread very thin. The Italians started with a decent supply support but when the Allies built up enough to support an offensive the odds turned in favour of the Allies. Both sides were fairly evenly matched in this small unit combat warfare.

A fuller readme will be written when we add the remaining operations in North Africa and Italy. For those who wish to fly the whole campaign then leave the 26th mission open so that you may continue to add to your successes when the rest are added.

Installation
This campaign was written and tested using the SAS BAT Mod Pack, available here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?board=264.0

It may work on other modded systems but the campaign uses Command and Control objects and Triggers, so many mission features would be lost or unworkable.

Extract the zip file to a temporary directory.
• Copy the decompressed Missions folder and the decompressed PaintSchemes folder to your IL-2 1946 root folder. This will load Whiskey Sierra’s SAAF campaign folder as well as the campaign itself.
• In the New Pilot Career page, choose RAF in the Air Force selection drop-down. Choose Piet’s Cheetahs in the Career drop-down.
• We recommend turning off No Instant Success for this campaign.
• The campaign is designed to be compatible with any rank selection.

Credits
Hayate provided countless SAAF skin packs for this campaign, including but not limited to SAAF Hawker Fury, Gladiator, Hurricane, Dragon Rapide, Hawker Hart, and P-36A4. We have Hayate Italian skin packs for Ca-133, CR32, CR42, Ro37 bis, and SM-79. And we have Vichy skins for the Potez 63.11.

Whiskey Sierra created a SAAF Campaign folder for us to use. The folder includes appropriate background, ranks and medals and is included as part of the installation.

Many thanks to the BAT team for developing, maintaining, and improving the BAT Modpack. And of course, thanks to Piet, for setting the stage for this great modding community.

I hope you get a chance to fly the campaign Bk. It was a very rewarding project working with Lars, Hayate,  and Whiskey Sierra to bring it to completion.

The pleasure and joy of the campaign is mine!

I have you to thank for that.  ;)

The "MGM" cat left us 20 years ago,

her name was "MAUSI"

Mausi always brought us live mice and wriggling fish.

I always praised the cat, brought the mice back to the garden alive or the fish to the water. We had a small river in front of the garden.

I had to save Mausi's life several times, she died of cancer at the age of 15.

The last few days, Mausi hasn't left my side. When I rocked (loudly), Mausi lay next to my tube amp.

If I was working or playing on the computer, she would lie down next to my monitor for hours.

At night she slept on my stomach - we couldn't help her anymore.

So Mausi is always with us in the MGM-logo (with my Lady Regina and me).
