Need help with hadware issue
« on: June 11, 2023, 10:21:53 AM »

Howdy,

I'm looking for help with an issue I have running BAT on my computer. If I have very many aircraft in the air, or if there are a lot of things going on like explosions and ground vehicle movement etc., I get stutters, and sometimes freeze frames that last for 10 or more seconds. It makes the game unplayable. I would like to be able to play in BAT because the graphics are better, and so are the choices of aircraft to fly.

Because of this issue, I don't play in BAT very often, and instead typically play VPMod or YPack. Those two modded version play flawlessly on my rig.

I am retired and living on a fixed income. I can't afford to spend several thousand dollars on a new rig. I'm kinda stuck with this one. I'm hoping that maybe a graphics card upgrade to something with more on board memory might fix the issue. The PCI-e slots on this rig are 1.0. I know it will support PCI-e 2.0 because that is what my current card is. I've read that version 2.1 and later will not work on my rig.

So, I will give some information about my very old rig, and maybe someone here who is more knowledgeable about such things can tell me if the problem is my CPU, or my graphics card, or both.

I'm running a Dell precision 490 with 8 gig of RAM and a 500 gig SSD hard drive.
Here are the CPU specs:

The graphics card is a Silent Cell GV-N98TSL-1GI. It has 1 gig of on board memory.
The specs on the graphics card can be found here:

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tom.

Maybe some error has creeped while you installed the BAT through it's different stages. Completely uninstall your BAT mod. Visit the Facebook link below to download a Repack of BAT 4.2.2 made by an Ukranian guy. It is a easy to install.

maybe a graphics card upgrade
Don't.
First, your graphics card suits the CPU quite nicely.
Both are somewhat ancient but should be good enough for general IL-2 usage if settings and mission complexity remain reasonable.
Second, FPS loss in crowded situations and/or when many effects (explosions) are visible in IL-2 is always an indication of either CPU-capped frame rates, or serious issues with the IL-2 installation. As long as otherwise frame rates are normal that is.
To rule out the latter, we'd need to take a look at the log.lst right after you have faced the issue.

Howdy,

Thank you both for your responses.

flying_dutchman,
I'm currently playing version 4.2.1, and only the WAW part of it. If it's determined that my install is the problem then I may try the version you referenced.

SAS~Storebror,
Good to know that my hardware is a good match, and that it should be adequate for this game.
So, I ran a mission this morning using both BAT and VPMod. Exact same mission with each version. 64 planes in the air on the Burma map, on autopilot. I'll include a screenshot that shows the frame rates in game for each. BAT on the left, VPMod on the right.
Here is a link to the log.ini file from the BAT install right after running the mission.

https://pastebin.com/cbxkbgVi

And just in case you are interested, here is the conf.ini I'm currently running in BAT.

HardwareShaders=1 in conf.ini should make a huge difference.
Perfect mode settings are listed here:

Well, no joy.

Tried just changing hardwareShaders to "1". Didn't help the frame rate and the graphics didn't look as good. Seemed more pixelated.

Tried using the copy and paste [open GL] string for Nvidia cards. Made the frame rate worse, graphics looked good, but then it wouldn't let me play one of the missions I built in the FMB. The error message said something about human/russian/paratrooper/ mono.sim not created, and then it crashed  to desktop when I clicked "OK".

Any suggestions on where to go from here?

"human/russian/paratrooper/ mono.sim not created" this is a typical error due to lack of memory in your graphic card so to solve the issue you need to use texture compression in conf.ini

TexCompress=2
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

It will also help to tone down a bit the other parameters in the OpenGL section.

Using hardware shaders=1  and the others maxed out settings will improve the looking but will ask more resources to your CPU and GPU and memory resulting in reduced playability so you need to compromise. As mentioned by Mike your system is "good enough for general IL-2 usage if settings and mission complexity remain reasonable" thus not really adequate for the settings that you are using.

You can try reducing the display resolution, or the quality of the textures it is a trial and error process  and depends on your priorities. You can also try to use UP3.4 that being a dedicated version for online player pays a lot of attention to resources needed and playability at the same time using the most recent and important mods.

Finally your log is showing an unusual high number of errors so in addition to the general considerations on your system capacity you need to have a look at your install and mods that you may have added.

Thanks Frankiek for your response.

I will give The "TexCompress=2" setting a try. The "TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1" is already set to  =1.

I may try re-installing BAT at some point, but turning the graphics down to get better frame rate isn't something I'm really interested in doing. I have VPMod and YPack both installed on my computer, and they both look really good and play flawlessly. If a fresh from scratch install of BAT doesn't fix the issue, then I will probably just live without BAT. At least until I win the lotto and get a new rig.  ;^)

If you can play flawlessly VPMod and YPack then you should also able to play BAT using the same settings. A fresh BAT install should be the way forward. When installing BAT pay attention to the Il2core.dll and Il2coreP4.dll that you will use (there are three or four different sets) as they play an important role in the correct display. Start with the defaults but if facing problems verify if changing them will make a difference.

That's a known one and Frankiek already gave the right advise.
Background of this is an unsufficient texture buffer size, that's why using ARB/S3TC texture compression cures it.

Now that we know that your GPU has texture size issues, it's predictable that the HD textures which are default in BAT will cause issues for you.
That by the way is a main difference between BAT and VP/YPack: BAT is HD per default, the others are SD.

You can find corresponding DLL sets in the "BATDOCS/BATDLLS" folder.
Give set 00 "SAS-ModAct" a try, that's SD. But be aware that certain planes need HD DLLs to show up at all (e.g. the Lancaster in WAW module).

Frankiek,
I tried the "TexCompress=2" setting, and it didn't help that I could tell.

I don't have any other mods installed with my BAT install. I just checked it with the JSGME.EXE, and there are no mods installed.

SAS~Storebror,
I replaced the default .dlls with the ones from the BATDLLS-00. It did help a little, but not much. Now the frame rate doesn't drop below about 5 fps, whereas before it would drop to 0 or 1. Even so, 5 fps is pretty much unplayable.

It only does that extreme drop when I use X2 or X4 time compression. In normal time the game is mostly playable with the occasional stutter or short freeze frame, and the fps doesn't drop below about 11 fps (that's in the thick of things with the mini map open). But still, with VPMod or YPack, I can use up to X8 time compression and the fps never drops below about 32. And all of this is with many planes in the air, lot's of explosions from flak and bombs, and a lot of stuff on the ground.

Do you still recommend against changing to a graphics card with at least 4 gig of onboard memory? Or do you think there is something wrong with my BAT install?

In the near future, I'll be wiping my hard drive and upgrading my Operating System on this computer. If I'm going to do a fresh install of BAT, that would probably be the time to do it.

As mentioned BAT is a resource demanding install however you should be able to run it I don't know which resolution you are using but considering the CPU and GPU I would recommend to use 1600x900 if you would like to use conf.ini max setting not very high AA and x8-16 AF
