Frustrated with skipping bombs with FAB series bombs
« on: June 24, 2023, 01:45:35 AM »

Hello everyone,

I have been having problems with skipping bombs with FAB series bomb (Soviet) in WWII module.  I want to know if it is realistic that FAB is not unreiable when doing skipping bombing? Each time I do skipping bombs, sometime the bomb went out and destroyed the ships while often it does not explode.  I am using 'low level' fuze setting with 5 seconds delay.

I am always learning new things everyday.  The advice with FABs are appreciated.

I think people would first have to ask what aircraft are you trying to do it with, is it on land or water, is it something that changed or are you using things you aren't used to?

I was flying all of Pe-2 series aircraft, I was flying anti-mission in QMB. i wanted to learn how to do skipping bombs by going over 200 mph, staying around 100 feet or lower and drop the bomb as I apporach the ships and climb rapidly to avoid crashing into the ship.

I am able to do it with Luftwaffe, USAAF / USN, RAF / RN, and IJA / IJN aircraft.

By the way, I just found the technical information by pressing tab to bring up communication menu, then pressed E. It tells me the minimum alittude I can do. Turns out that when using any soviet aircraft and low level bombing fuze, I have to stay above certain altitude (56 ft).  For the best result, I stay above 100 ft.  I am surpised by the alittude limitation for FAB series bombs.

isn't there a way for me to edit the alittude limitation for FAB series?

It turns out that it is more tricky to do anti-ship skipping bombs with FAB-250s and FAB-500s.

I learned by doing multi quick missions that as long I stay lower than 225 mph (362 kph) and above 59 ft (20 m) with low level bombing fuze, I have high rate of success.  I am practicing flying above 100 ft and going slower than 225 to see if I have constantly high rate of success with 'bomb skipping' techniques for Soviet aircraft.

Try a steep high speed dive at the ship, then pull up and as you gunsight crosses the horizon release your bomb.

The more speed you have the further it skips.

The bomb needs a certain time to arm, I think you just need it to skip long enough to arm and blow.

I just tried your Pe-2, I got the 500 FAB to skip and blow, but I couldn't get a hit on the stationary ship.

It was also hard to get enough speed to skip it long enough to hit the ship, few times it bounced over.  I think with practice I can get it.  I had the fuse on instant.

In open water the FAB would blow at the end of the skips that would go on longer.

It was easier when I tried the P-40 105 with 250FAB

Thank you for the tip. I have most successful skipping bomb for anti-shipping in Tu-2S.  Pe-2 is a tricky aircraft because at once you lose the airspeed, it is tricky to get airspeed back.  I realize that Pe-2 is more like a dive bomber like Ju 87 Stuka.  (Correct me if I am wrong though).  And she is more effective as dive bomber.  However, like you said, with practicee, Pe-2 can be used for anti-ship skipping bomber successfully.

I want to add, the higher you are from water, the higher bomb wil bounce off from water.  The most tricky target is small warship with smaller, thinner or shorter hull, compared to cargo ships.  Unlike dive bomb or level bomb, I find skipping bomb to be most thrilling, challenging skills to master, and most satisfying when you manage to destroy the targets.
