G'day mate

Here's the links to the two pieces of software, there are a number of how-to posts and videos on the web, here's just one.

OpenTrack plus AITrack simply locks on to your face.
Yes indeed, I've tried that.
However as a TrackIR 5 user myself, I must say that this solution (which works, no doubt about that) is nowhere near the experience you get from a "true" head tracker system like TrackIR.
In particular, despite fiddling with all kinds of settings, I have never found a sweet spot between lag and jitter. Either your head movement applies with a noticeable delay, or it keeps shaking a little constantly.
Apparently, AITrack can be supported by wearing a hat with a paper glued to it, showing a black-on-white rectangle to the camera. Didn't try that so far.

Just for the record, my system exceeds all OpenTrack and AITrack requirements by far:
i7-12700K
48GB RAM
Nvidia RTX 2800 Super
Logitech Brio Webcam (4K @30FPS / 1080p @60FPS / 720p @90FPS, dFOV 90°/78°/65°, additional Infrared-Sensor + Infrared LED)

Aruco marker in conjunction with OpenTrack is the one I'm currently playing around with.
Did mapping after work and am pleased with the results.
Next will be fine tuning and smoothing.

The beauty of this setup is only OpenTrack is needed which apparently has low CPU usage.
You can 3D print a card holder that clips on to your headphones.

If this fails to meet my expectations I will resume building a infra-red tracker as I have gathered the majority of parts already.

P.S.  There's even an alternative of placing a mobile phone on your head.

Ah yes Aruco, that's the one.
I would expect that to work better than AITrack because it eliminates one app and the resulting lag with it, and it is supposed to lower the CPU usage massively at the same time.

That good old gyro tracking using smartphones is quite outdated it seems.

I’m not at my place at the moment but tomorrow I’ll be able to share my presets if anyone is interested. I agree that the software that uses cellphones is obsolete.
I can also post pictures of my install so to show how I have set it on my pc.

I have used FaceTrackNoir for a few years and was reasonably happy with it.
But sometimes it just did 'lock up' and i had to reset during a dogfight.
That is why i changed to TrackHat Clip and never had a problem again after that.
But that was the old one with a clip (infrared leds).
Now they also use a IR facetrcking unit.

But FaceTrakNoir did work nice.

Well I spent my Saturday morning playing around with OpenTrack and Aruco.
Done a few things different than norm,

Card oriented with longer bar at top.
Yaw, Pitch and X all inverted.
Didn't disable Roll, X or Y.
Mapping is all linear, no curves or dead zones.

Everything works in perfect harmony, can't believe how flawless it works.
Now I have to put in the hours so it all becomes second nature.

Here you can see my cockpit and my Trackhat clip on my headset. I managed to make it sort of wireless by connecting the clip to a portable storage. in the future I'll make sure to shorten the wire.
If anyone is interested I'll upload my best preset. In case you use it remember that I've my camera on the bottom of the tv screen, slightly on the right. The tracking is perfectly smooth. My ps3 cam has a black lens, bought on Amazon,  for optimum performance in every light condition.

Ciao!

Just for info.
I used SmoothTrack and OpenTrack for a while. I found it to be the most simple solution for my "leisure" flights in FS2020. Good illumination and the proper angle of the camera (I used a smartphone or a tablet) were essential.
It worked well for me in IL2 on the straight and steady flight. But whenever I wanted to do some aerobatics or to smash something in the air or on the ground, my thumb started to take over and twitched and jerked while trying to reach the "hat" button on the joystick. Old habits die hard. Damned muscle memory. I succumbed to my thumb and stopped SmoothTrack experiments for now.

Done quite a bit of flying over the last few days and the initial habit of using the hat switch to look around is gone, just like when I got my rudder pedals it took awhile to get out of the habit of twisting the flight stick.
The hat switch is now assigned to aileron and elevator trim, the button on my throttle which snapped to the mirror is now assigned to toggle between pilot and rear gunner view.

I've heard positive feedback about Smooth Track, just another option for those wanting to give head tracking a try.

Well i tried this version of Opentrack and with a webcam.
It did work, but even with all settings cahnged to my old settings, it did not function as good as my Trackhat/TrackClip.
The opentrack did not like it if i had to use a tissue while flying (i am very alergic)  :P

Also, i got a lot of jitter when i was reaching the end of the filed of view (most right and left yaw).
So after flying for an hour i switched back quickly to my trackclip.

But i leave it on my sytem, if my trackclip ever wants a vacation  :D
