Hi Glenn,

here you go. Half moon, midnight, shot 1 dead ahead, shot 2, almost directly behind (slightly starboard quarter).

Second set: daytime, 0800, similar shot angles. Lysander SD variant.

This is one of my bugaboos about IL2 .
There was very little instrument lighting in WW2.
True , many had radium paint on the witness marks of the
instruments , but most cockpits had red lighting by small incandescent
bulbs on flexible columns mounted to the cockpit frame somewhere -
in some cases more than one light.

These lights produced red light that minimized the detrimental affect
of illumination on night vision , and illiminated the radium paint on the
instruments which showed as whitish yellow - not blue green.

Clive,
I extracted the plane and cockpit. A very quick look reveals something something of a mess. The cockpit is largely using the same resources that make up the plane's 'external' model, including the use of the plane's skin (hence the extreme lack of detail in the general 'pit texturing.) This includes the coarse surface normals, too, which result in odd looking light and shading on the canopy framing, for instance.

The cockpit folder includes only these elements:

All this makes for a fair bit of work in order to bring up to a proper standard. Lowering the glare for the interior will require to lower the Specular values for the external model as well, which will give it a flatter, less reflective appearance. I'm looking to see if anything can be retrieved, without too much labour, from this horror show...

First and only aircraft I have made from the ground up, I had/have still a lot to learn. :D

Rather than just use a sim cockpit I tried to combine the Hurricane instrument panel with the existing model but that meant the cockpit detailing used the same meshes and texture as the rest of the model, what I maybe should have done was actually map the bits from the external model I used for the cockpit to their own skin but it is what it is, a freak show.

I was hasty in my previous post!

In my hurry to look things over (in the midst of a few other ongoing projects ;)  ), I forgot to check for and correct the LOD values of 0 in a number of meshes, which make them not appear in my mesh viewer. It turns out that the cockpit does include many more elements than I had initially thought.   ::(

Anyway, I'm in the process of fixing things. The main culprit is .mat files having SpecularPow of 32. This really heightens the intensity of even a weak degree of specularity. Here's a progress shot, with the Sun behind me and where the glare is at its worst.

I'll release the fix shortly...

That control column could do with an upgrade, looks like an Australian 50 cent coin.

If only the column handle could be so 'round' as your fitty cent piece!   ;D  (That's not a misspelling; I'm engaging in a silly reference to a rapper's handle.)

I could maybe try and fix some of the more clunky parts such as the stick grip, I was trying to keep things within the poly limit during the build but maybe I should take a look at that grip again at the very least.  ::(

Surprising how bad some of it looks, after all the years of building it this is the first time for a long while I actually sat in the cockpit again. :-[ :(

I don't think it looked all that bad at the time of release, Pete. It is just that we have seen a lot of good cockpit improvements since then which tends to put the older ones in the shade - just look at Asura's recent work on the seaplanes as a good example. Looking at real life photos, the Lizzie instrument panel is pretty good - it's just that stick...
