This is one of my bugaboos about IL2 .
There was very little instrument lighting in WW2.
True , many had radium paint on the witness marks of the
instruments , but most cockpits had red lighting by small incandescent
bulbs on flexible columns mounted to the cockpit frame somewhere -
in some cases more than one light.

These lights produced red light that minimized the detrimental affect
of illumination on night vision , and illiminated the radium paint on the
instruments which showed as whitish yellow - not blue green.
