in Windows 11 it enabled it self after an update
Sorry to say but that's a myth.

IL-2 1946 ran fine from my External HDD before on my Win 11 Laptop, and with out me making any change to the Windows settings it has DEP enabled.

So or DEP was enabled all the time and did not prevent IL-2 from launching from the External HDD for me, or something enabled DEP other than me. (also did not download any security/privacy/cleaning tools etc.)

I am away from home and accidentaly erased my backup of the game, includding all my custom made skins, nose art, and squadron logo's :( but i copy my current install to the external HDD again and see if it still launches from there on this Laptop.

But from what ive seen and heard Windows 11 enables/changes settings with some updates.

Matter of fact, only Windows Server OS has DEP enabled for all Services and Apps per default, and it did so for many years now.
Windows Desktop (i.e. Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10 and 11) OS per default enable DEP for essential Windows programs and services only (which is fine with IL-2) and no Update ever changed that.

something enabled DEP other than me
Quite possible.

did not download any security/privacy/cleaning tools etc.
No need to.
There are plenty of "tools" out there that keep f*cking up your system silently through app updates.
You might have installed a "helper" years ago that shot you in the feet just recently.

Just got home now, copied IL-2 to External HDD again, so i check later.

I never installed any "system" tools etc. on the Laptop, its basicly a clean Windows 11 Home install with unneeded stuff removed and just CAD software from my work wich has been on there also from the start, and its my private laptop so no one else has access to it.

If you say so.
Must have been Gremlins in that case.

Your right, i am sorry.
I misread that, (language difrence in menu maybe) it is on "DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" (If i remember correctly i think in the past you could fully disable it)
So it starts from the External SSD, but i got an isue with the game on the Laptop wich i had before in the past, but i dont need to run it on the laptop so maybe i look at that later, only usefull for me if i am gonna work on new skins etc.
