How to land the Fw-190D9
« on: October 08, 2023, 12:47:27 PM »

Long time lurker. First time posting. Tried a search and couldn't find answer.
I installed the latest BAT. I like what I see. Now I also have il2 Great Battles and learn how to fly ALL the Focke Wulfs in that sim. I love the Fw-190D-9. But in iL2 1946 BAT D-9 while I have no trouble with takeoffs but the D-9 doesn't bleed speed for landings. It's slicker then black ice. Any tips would be appreciated. TIA

You basically have to figure out what your stall speed is with the configuration you want, like flaps.  Keep it above that speed a little, then try not to tip it over trying to keep it flying straight while you turn to your strip.

I don't know what model of D-9 you tried, I just did the FW-190D-9, 1944

That thing sucks to fly at landing speeds.

No trim, and the controls are too touchy to not over control and crash.

When you are stable, lower the speed a little to start a decent infront of the landing strip.

Thanks. Yeah I tried the 1944 model in the stock mission.
I'm not the only one that notices it. Tried the flying the Ta-152...it's a slippery beast to on landing. I like BAT though.

Not sure of all the physics in this game, but there is no "weight" or "friction" modeled, like when you are sitting on the ground with wind it slides you to the side like on ice.

In patch 4.12.2 I use the FW-190 mod from Dimas (Aviaskins).
The stabilizer control works.
For more precise control of the motor, I sometimes turn on manual control of the propeller pitch (usually the landing pitch is 40-50 percent).
If you accurately maintain the speed while descending (from 250 to 170 km per hour), then touching the strip occurs at a speed of 150-160 km. per hour according to the device.

I loved FW 190 in all variants and in all versions of the game. My only problem was to re-learn the landing procedure after I didn't fly 190 for a long time. It's more difficult compared to many other fighters, indeed.

Funny I love the 190, but somehow seems when I fly the Axis, I end up flying the 109... it seems to be OK once you learn how to handle those narrow wheels.

Definitely the US fighters are easier to land in my opinion, especially the P-47s.  I never had any issues with the P-38s and P-39s that some people mention.  I'll have to try the Doras to see how I do.

;D  Many THANKS!. That mod did the trick! Still a challenge to land...but the aircraft (Ta-152) it was not as 'slick' I'll modify the air.ini to take the rest of the Fw's tomorrow.

Sorry! - I don't understand what 'slick' is.
I use Google translator, which does not always correctly translate words from English into Slavic languages.
By the way: I have a Mustang mod with “corrected” FM and motors.

Like ALL Fw 190.
It's very difficult.
Begin landing from very far: speed is decreasing very slowly whatever you do.
But you lose altitude very quickly.
If speed is too high, when reaching ground, you'll never touch it ON THE RUNWAY or very near end of it.
If too low, stall and crash.
Try, try again... :)

The short answer to why the FW-190s in IL-2 '46 don't bleed speed is that the auto prop pitch is wonky.
The longer one is that the in game Fw Komandogerät is coded in such a way that it will gradually decrease RPM down to the lowest setting written in the .emd file (down to 700 rpm!) as the throttle is pulled back. This means that the propeller blades will almost always end up having a positive lift coefficient, and will in turn produce thrust even at low throttle settings which prevents bleeding speed when trying to land.

This could be fixed by adding a new RPM "cutoff" parameter in motor.class and below which the Fw Komandogerät would not try to lower RPM with the throttle. The lowest I can find in original sources is 1800 RPM but I don't know how low it could get in reality.
