Note: I am posting this for Larschance, who is incapacitated at the moment with a bad back. I did some testing on this but it is Larchance's work.
A second note: additional packs added Dec 2023 - see below...
New Speech Packs
for Il2 Sturmovik 1946IntroductionFor the past few months I have been working on a new set of speech packs using both the AI speech converter Micmonster for AI voices and using my local friends for human voices. I have made some minimal changes to wording in the phrases to suit the nationalities portrayed, with apologies to those I have misrepresented by accident.
The packs have been tested in BAT Flashpoint but I believe they can be applied to any version of Il2 Sturmovik such as vpmedia, or up to v4.15.
My friend Vonofterdingen has helped me set up the packages in mediafire for your download and enjoyment. See below for instructions how to set up the appropriate folder and speech pack. You can use these via jsgme so it will be easier to revert to stock speech packs if desired or just disable the existing folder and insert the new pack.
Marcost has been a great help in modifying some of the packs and advising me how to use the free Audacity download for changing radio effects and speech patterns.
Micmonster has a large selection of voices from various nations. You type in each phrase and it creates the sound in the chosen language. My knowledge of foreign languages is limited so the packs are for the most part English with foreign accents rather than the original language. I chose what I thought the best sounding voices, but some nationalities did not sound right such as Canadians. Sorry guys. Micmonster provided some speech extremes such as terrified or excited but I felt they were not quite true for now. Maybe in the future the emotional side of AI will improve.
Available Speech PacksThe following packs are available.
GB.
A mix of Commonwealth AI voices and escapees from occupied countries. Many RAF squadrons had this type of make up so it makes for an interesting radio chat, especially during the landing pattern. There are two versions on offer, the original voices I created from micmonster and the modded voices by Marcost which give a more ‘radio’ effect. I give you the choice as everyone has different tastes. Simply disable the existing GB folder in samples/speech/GB by inserting a minus sign in front, then add the new GB folder. To revert back to the original folder just insert a minus in front of the new GB folder and remove the minus sign from the original GB folder.

A mix of African AI voices. The South African voices are English and Afrikaans with the others as ‘guest’ Africans such as Kenyan and Tanzanian. The Marcost mod is included in our recent SAAF campaign but I offer both the original and modded versions for those who would rather fly a shorter set of missions or just quick missions. An SA folder is included in the SAAF campaign set up ‘For Piet’s Sake’ available at SAS and M4T.

Run the JSGME program to load and unload the voice packs. Those not using BAT should rename BATMODS to the Mods folder of your game, or comment out the existing (stock) GB folder and copy one of these in its place.
Additional Packs - Added Dec 2023Over the past year I got together with my friends and neighbours and recorded them as aircrew for our Il2 1946 sim. They are aged between 55 and 98! We had a lot of laughs and the older folk were very delighted to get involved. You might want to try this where you live. Even the older people can sound like experienced pilots. Remember some of the early war aircrew were in their 30s and even 40s age wise. Some of these voices are stronger or more commanding than others as they were in real life.
I recorded 14 people in 31 different roles. i.e. some people play several different Actors, according to their wishes. I am particularly delighted with the three ladies who are on ground control. Their voices fit the WW2 period very well.
My thanks to Marcost who did a great job in modifying my recordings so the voices sound like they are on radio. This also allowed the weaker voices to be enhanced and sound stronger. We used the free converter Audacity in the process.
It is a long meticulous process to create these packs so if you have no patience then it may be too much for you to make up your own. However, I have provided both the modded and original voices so you can mix and match as you wish. There are four packs for the RAF which you can use straight away. You can also swap some voices between packs until you get the mix that suits you. It may be preferable for you to use these via jgsme so you can revert to the original if and when required.
When I recorded each voice my microphone gave a clicking sound. I was going to trim these but my ex service friends told me the clicks were as they sounded in their service days. I leave it you to decide.
My thanks to Jo Burridge, Hilary Nicklin, Maggie Beale, Bert Burbridge, Michael Napier, Chris Dunning, Tony Robinson, Mel Anderson, Barry Mellor, George Jenkins, Stuart Schofield, Len Lowe, Jim Osborne, and Sadik Alkhalili for contributing their voices.

We hope to create missions where multiple accents will be heard, such as a fighter wing operating from the UK bases or North Africa or Malta. There are a few glitches at present but we will work on it to see if it is practical. It may prove too complex on the airwaves for most. Certainly many voices asking for permission to land at the same time can be overwhelming. We also may develop a way to mix and match individual voices to create new squadrons but the veteran players may already be doing that. Sometimes less is more. Any campaign builders who wish to experiment with mixed voice squadrons should contact us for more information.
Anyway, we hope this increases the immersion factor and your enjoyment of this great sim.
Have fun
