IL-2 1946 will not load.
« on: January 01, 2024, 02:27:09 PM »

Can anyone help with getting IL-2 1946 to load and play? Here's my thread on another forum https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/86369-il-2-will-not-load/

After years of playing, the game would no longer start. After several months of trying to fix it I uninstalled the game and started from scratch trying to re-install it only to have that fail as well.

I uninstalled the game, cleared the registry and tried installing from the disc. The disc loads, but when done there isn't an il2fb.exe file in the IL-2 1946 folder. A search on the computer doesn't find one either. I use Avast and IL-2 1946 is in the exemption folder to allow it.

(Edit: Uninstalled and re-installed with Avast turned off, still no il2fb.exe file.)

Where is the il2fb.exe going or why won't it install?

Additionally, the DirectX 9c cannot be installed as it isn't compatible with Windows 10. I do have Directx 12 installed though.

My monitor is set at 1920x1080 while IL-2's best setting is 1440x1080. I've tried changing the con.ini file to 1920x1080 with no luck and also changing my monitor to 1440x1080, still no luck.

First of all check your windows DEP settings to verify that is not preventing IL-2 to start: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,71235.0.html

then forget about the setup.exe it was obsolete already 15 years ago just go directly to conf.ini: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=9756.0 most important is that resolution in conf.ini needs to match your monitor settings

If you have the install from disc then you need to have the CD in the drive to launch the game so best thing is to install the selector here https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,16403.0.html
Selector can launch both stock game and mod game just follow the instructions

Yes antivirus this day can delete suspicious (in their view) exe (and much more) without any warning and even if you have them in the  exclusion list. My Kaspersky keep doing this all the time and with IL-2 modding tools is a nightmare. Once they have unilaterally decided that a file is suspicious (just suspicious not necessarily dangerous) end of story the same with websites after years of being a member now the official Fulqrum website is off limits for me

Thx Frankiek. The DEP settings got the game to start!  I've uninstalled Avast for this installation so it won't be a problem. Thx

I'm back up to 4.13.4 and it works. My con.ini file is set at 1920x1080 and the game still plays in "square mode" with black edges on each side. Is this correct?

that will depend from your monitor settings just go to start >settings >System >display and check the resolution what you have there is what you need to have in conf.ini

Make sure you have in your conf.ini:

My monitor settings are 1920x1080.
The con.ini (conf) file is set to 1920x1080.
My screen shot here shows the game menu is set to 1920x1080 with Full Screen & Use Widescreen FOV selected,
but the game still has two inch black edges on the left & right sides when played. Is that normal or should the game stretch to actual Full Screen/Full monitor width?

I've added Red Lines to the blackout area when playing.

You should be able to set it to restore and ignore files and websites, with websites make sure its not the browser you are using thats blocking access (should say blocked by Kaspersky in your case if Kaspersky blocks it) and think there should be something to click to go ahead to the site anyway (atleast here with Norton it always gives those options wen it blocks files or sites)

well after just closing one thread on similar subject I don't want to reopen the discussion. I was just venting out by the very proactive behavior my anti-virus takes and yes in theory you should be able to overcome the forceful advice but in reality it becomes very difficult close to impossible. It is also  very clear why this is happening and the need to reduce possible vulnerabilities however at times this is very annoying

About Kaspersky.
Years ago (when I still used RU software) I gave up and abandoned Kaspersky after many years (I have been a paid user since the 1990s) exactly for that reason - its high "pro-activity" in blocking imaginable threats. Since then, I have used Avira, Avast and something else, all of them were more user-friendly in that respect.
