Spitfire FRMk.XIVe serial request
« on: January 05, 2024, 09:55:45 AM »

Evening all,

I'm currently doing some research on Spitfire units post 1945, and one that caught me was 443 Sqn RCAF.. their Spitfire XIV's bore a spinner that represented the colour of a wasp or a bee.. it's a very striking addition to a Spitfire livery.. and not one I believed existed.

One Spitfire that I've found is coded 21-J, but I have no idea of what the serial number could be as it's covered by the elevators/tail section.. Does anyone have an idea what her serial is?

All the best,
BlackAce (Eric)

I had a look on allspitfirepilots.org , and i found 5 spitfires from 443 squadron with serials beginning with TZ1 as that is visible on the picture you supplied, and they are:
-tz125
-tz131
-tz132
-tz141
-tz198

Not sure where to go from here, they all seem very similar, no individual callsign letters though

Hope it helps,

Actually I looked at the picture you supplied, and compared it to the 2 spits from my list that have photos, and noticed that on your pic, there were old letters that were painted over, and the new 443 Sq letters painted over the top. I compared the camouflage and noticed the camo and patterns were an absolute match.

TZ141

TZ141

Comparison Of your photo and tz141

Closeup of both engine areas

100% sure this is the one

Thankyou for this research result mate... Granted the post-war Spitfire's aren't well documented as the 39-45 types.. but this is a huge help!
