Clive,
That 'disc' is there so that when the tree is viewed from a steep angle, particularly from directly overhead, it doesn't disappear, or look like a + sign.  ;)

To remove it, the mesh would need to be altered. It's easy to do with any text editor. For the Vertices and Materials sections, the last 4 lines are removed. Same for the Sh_Vertices. For the Faces and Sh_Faces sections, the last 2 lines are removed.

And of course the values for the vertex and face counts must be reduced accordingly.

Incidentally, I tried to remove the shadow for that horizontal 'disc', but without removing the polys for the texture. I was surprised that the shadow was still cast even though the Sh_Vertices and Sh_Faces were absent!

Thank you for the information, Glenn. Trouble is - I want the best of both worlds...to look ok from the air, and to look good from a ground location on an airfield as well. Pity.

You can see from a previous image I posted that the horizontal plane blends in perfectly with this sort of tree.
And I did manage to fix the shadow problem.

I like that, Shane, which one of the trees is that?

Hi Glenn and Clive

Like I said at the time one trees shadow looked good, just had to figure out why.
So it was a matter of attaching the two (main tree and horizontal plane) in a different order.
The horizontal plane shadow is still there, only now below the main tree shadow instead of being on top.

Tree pictured above is winter tree 1, although this was the first fuller model.
Cloned two crossed planes then rotated 45 degrees.
I did include these models with the download, however I switched to doing simpler models before working on the LODs for these.

For the scrawny trees, with the typical Ambient and Diffuse values of 1.0 the shadowed side--even the sides illuminated at a shallow angle--go too unnaturally dark. To obtain a reduced degree of darkness on the shadowed side, do this in base.mat, for at least the scrawny deciduous trees:

  Ambient      1.3  //1.0
  Diffuse      0.6  //1.0

The result is a more natural lightness in the shadows that obtains from the additional reflection of light from the surrounding snow.

Increasing Ambient makes the object overall lighter, but also adds relatively more light to shadowed faces. Diffuse is decreased by a similar degree to bring the sunlit faces back to 'normal' brightness. Here this would be a value of 0.7. I set 0.6 so as to have the snow on the trees have a brightness a little bit lower, in line with the typical landscape tone of the textures on my winter maps, and for the appropriately low winter time Sun angles.

Hi Gerald

There is a shadow setting in the configuration file, what do you have it set at?
Suggested setting is 2.
