Ship speed....Task Force general setting in ships.ini
« on: January 20, 2024, 03:56:39 AM »

Hi mates!

I noticed that some ships....blues and reds....have their speed set at 50 for all and their ships.ini speed value string is added with a note:

Speed = 50 // Task Force

Anyone have a clue about?

This speed....if compared to some real ships speed....is slower for someone (ex Independence CVL historically have a speed of 59 kmph while in game have a speed limited to 50) BUT higher for others (ex Casablanca CVE historically have a speed of 35 kmph while in game have a speed rised to 50)....

Maybe this is intentionally done to help mission builders to have the positioning of the ships in a Task Force (as suggested by the // note) simpler?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I'm the guilty party here,as I am the principal offender when it comes to adding ships to BAT!

The reason is exactly as you guessed - to make compiling task forces easier in missions.

To summarise: all CV/CVL and ships that would typically comprise a carrier task force (BB, CA, CL, DD) are set to this default speed (25 knots). This gives you enough speed for non-catapult takeoff generally with no messing about with wind speed/direction in FMB.

Major warships that are not required to support carriers, principally German and Italian, are set to 18 knots default.

Merchants that would form part of a convoy are set to 12 knots, as are obvious convoy escorts e.g. Flowers.

Submarines I never got around to fully standardising, as they are not typically going to be combined with other vessels, so it does not matter much. However submerged are 4 knots, surfaced around 9 knots.

Sailing vessels are 5 knots.

Obviously these can always be adjusted on a case-by-case basis when designing a specific mission if appropriate. Note that the default is 50% of full speed in the game, so technically (but not realistically) you could have your fleet carriers travelling at 50 knots!

Yours,

Clive

Hi Clive and thanks for your reply!

Now I got confirmation of the reason behind and I agree with it!

As a great supporter of some kinds of standardization I agree with a common set of value....

Moreover I wasn't aware of the default speed set as 50% of the full speed!

I also discover the reasons for the decimals in some ship speed...the conversion of knots in kmph/2....

I'll study a bit in deep how the different parties task force speed was historically set usually....

I couldn't explain Whiskey how this Speed thing works.

My CVE WIP is my first Ships build. When Users have real questions
about Technical, code stuff, I can't tell what I can't know.

I'm used to the BAT Ships system, I see nothing wrong, as I use it everyday.

Thanks for explaining in Detail and your efforts in Ship integration.

Best wishes

Hi Tobi!

Your shipyards have realized perfect vessels!

Your work is very good for sure!

I was only learning how to set ships speed....

There are a lot of ways to work around....but I have to admitt that Clive approach is the best option!

No problem, feel to ask anytime. Although I was clueless about this in Detail.
I have my own workaround, with that re-editing, taking the Ships.ini speeds as they come,
to tinker. I set up Missions in FMB, then re-edit Speeds manually in .mis files.
But Glad we had it explained. Might be of use for some

Thanks to Clive for the explanation, how the specs work out. Shedded a bit light here too.

Have a fine Day Gentlemen

BTW....maybe could be useful....

About lerning...

Can you teach us how do you set conformal speed in mission editing?

Pages  #4 and #5 of this guide explains (hopefully) anything you need to know about ship speed:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/r6bi95pylalobou/BATanti-shipping_missions.7z/file

Note that this guide is a bit outdated in some aspects as it was written before triggers were introduced in BAT, but the speed section is still relevant. Any additional questions please ask.
