FMB ship listing preference
« on: May 01, 2024, 04:48:46 AM »

Hi mates!

I have managed to add almost all avilable ships in BAT....

I think to release these updates to public download in the next future as an unofficial update to BAT 422HF4 because since at the moment no new ship is released this update can be a general additon....

But I have noticed that WAW ships.ini files have a lot of double entries....that I plan to fix in the next days....

I also plan to organize better the ships listing in FMB....and the time I'll give to the ships.ini cleanup give me time to ask you how do you prefere have the FMB listing organized....

Actually we have a some general section....one for merchant one each for the various National Navy....

But I was thinking about an option type oriented order....like this:

MERCHANT CARGO
MERCHANT TANKER
MERCHANT ARMED

CV
CVL
CVE
BB
BC/CA/CL
DD/DE/TP/ESCORT
SMALL VESSELS
SUBMARINES

1) MERCANT ordered from bigger to smaller
2) MILITARY ordered by hull number
3) MILITARY TYPE (BB...CV...) listed with in alphabetical navy order:

DKM
IJN
RM
RN
USN
USSR
MINOR NATIONS

Let me know your preference in the pool....or your suggestion obviously!

Hi WS,

as I'm the one who created the current ship order for BAT, I'll just explain how I did it.

First off, good luck with your attempt to tidy ships.ini!

There are often multiple entries for an individual ship (often three or four), and the file is massive. Note that I pretty much standardised ship speeds to make compiling convoys and fleets easier in FMB, as that way you typically do not need to change individual ship speeds one at a time. For example, CVs and typical task force ships (BB, AC, LC, DD) are all set to 25 knots. Navies without CVs are set to 18 knots, and so on. Il2 only reads the FIRST entry in ships.ini, so if you are going to start deleting other entries keep in mind that only the first entry is likely to have my default speeds set - delete that - and the other entries will likely have different speeds.

Secondly, my approach was to group ships (chief.ini) by national navy usually, starting with CV and working down in class to DD, DE etc. This again tends to make a national task force in FMB easier. Merchants appropriate to convoys are also grouped together, with odds and ends (e.g. harbour tugs) lower down the list.

Yours,

Clive

Thanks for your reply mate!

Sometimes ago we were in touch about ships speed....and I'll keep your workaround about speed for convoy building as I agree with you....

About the ships.ini the entries are repeated 2 times starting not only with the ships or the guns parameters but also the initial ammended entries describing the various entries....so I tought more about a copy past error than an intentional doubling....moreover not all the first ships in the list IIRC have the correct values for Western ship extension mod....

The listing is a different affair as I usually go for the type of the ships when building missions or now that I'm looking at campaign....so it could be only due a personal mindset....if the most choose the actual I'll release this way with my listing as option....if opposite my listing as default and the older as option....infact actually the file I use is build that way and I had thought to rebuild it only as final evolution....
