Porting Kit, Il-2 on Mac and mods.
« on: May 07, 2024, 07:43:03 AM »

Hello everyone and thank you for your welcome.

First of all, I'd like to mention that I'm a player of IL2 1946 4.10 on Mac...yes, you read that right.
Thanks to a little hobbyist app called Porting Kit, I can finally play IL2 again after years of transitioning from Windows to Mac.
The app installs an emulator capable of running from GOG or steam versions of quite a few games, but that's where there's a bit of a problem.

The version I have is 4.10 and I'd like to update it/and install mods, but most of the files are unreadable by an OSX (Porting Kit/Wine does have an option to install mods, but it's impossible to extract any of the files as they're in Windows formats).

I know there's little chance of anyone being able to help me (since I assume the vast majority of people here are running the game on Windows) but I'd be grateful if you had any ideas.

Thanks again and enjoy the flight!

I am absolutely non-techie , but I googled how to set up a virtual windows drive on mac and
got this.
Don't know if it will help , but best of luck.

Thanks for the reply, actually one of my first intentions had been to create a Windows bootcamp for my Mac but the problem was that to do so I would have had to use a special USB key containing an ISO (a sort of virtual image allowing you to simulate operating software) costing almost 50 to 60 euros with little guarantee of success.

Hence my discovery of Porting Kit, which even if it requires a bit of tinkering allows me to play IL-2 without too many problems.

I think I've found the beginnings of a solution, since GOG offers the disk image (ISO) of IL-2 version 4.13 (all I need to do now is see if I can reinstall the game on my Mac without any problems).
