Why no BAT Server?
« on: May 26, 2024, 09:06:08 AM »

Why is there no BAT server?

Is it cost?  How much does one cost?

I only just now started using BAT for online play, and a group of guys show up about 2pm Central on the weekends...

...one I even flew with way the hell back on the Skies of Valor days...

All the servers are something else though, and I never see any really populated other than a few people.

Honestly, with all the content I have no idea why everyone isn't on BAT and only BAT.

I never used Ultrapack though, but I used to fly online with HSFX, still BAT gives so much more...

The creators of BAT often said that this pack was made for offline use.

However, those who operated BAT servers can explain more about their experience.

Just to note, that BAT is more resource-hungry than Ultrapack. Play the same mission in both mod packs and you will see a huge difference in FPS.
In my opinion, UP is sufficient for the mid-1930s to mid-1950s period. Unless you miss a certain "BAT exclusive" model or object or function (I miss the amphibious capability of Grumman Duck, but how many Duck pilots are there?). Or if you create a mission with a country outside of the UP list - it's shorter.
WWI and Cold War - here you need BAT, of course.
And some cool features were implemented in UP only as Mistel operations in the multiplayer.

Some players say that the ntrk records do not record accurately a mission .
It may also happen that all the players do not see the same landscape , for examples clouds could be at different location depending on the player .
I think that the more issues will happen with JTW , because the use of missiles could probably create an unrealistic mayhem .

Wingwalker;
if you're playing with people you know and it's a small group then, depending on your system, you don't need a server, just someone to host.  That said, I haven't been able to convince my small group of HSFX players to make the leap to BAT so I'm ignorant of how BAT performs online.  I'm assuming all the BAT online players are simply hosting their respective little groups.

Another aspect may be the actual online gameplay in that a 'free for all' server tends to be dogfight-centric with no real missions, jump in and it's furball mania (and in my case get shot down in fairly short order).  Hosting small coordinated groups allows for planned and/or historically relevant missions usually coop etc.  That's just my gut feeling and not based on any specific info or insight.

Yeah I've read in the past that BAT isn't supposed to be stable for multi, but after joining some games recently it seemed fine to me, accept how much I crash.  (note to self... learn how to land an A-4M)

I personally miss the action of dog fighting a human pilot on a server, and with the fact that I would probably loose a duel its nice to be able to re-spawn and keep going.

With a multi server people wouldn't have to wait, or even  miss people joining the co-op.

I used to run HSFX, but never tried Ultra Pack, I'm not apposed to them, just don't have the room on my PC to run 3 full versions of IL-2...

Just for information, about the room on the PC.
I checked my installations:
4.14.1 - 10.2GB
HSFX 7.0.3 - 13.0GB
UP 3.4 - 25.8GB
BAT - 95.5GB

Skins folders originally were: 8GB in BAT and 3-4GB in other versions.
Then I linked all Skins folders to the single folder on the external drive...it's almost 14GB now.

A version of the game can be installed on an external hard drive .
