R & G Pilot Works
« on: July 27, 2024, 08:24:15 PM »

Hi guys

I have been using one of Ranwers pilots in my P-40E cockpit for some time, even though it was a static model.
A couple of weeks ago I watched a video on Aces of Thunder and saw they simply had the pilot's glove/gauntlet holding the stick and throttle.
I thought we could have that! Immediately followed by why not have the whole arm?

I made up a crude proof of concept and thought it looked pretty good so I posted it for others to try.
With a few positive comments motivating me, I began modifying the pilots by converting with MshConvert118, importing into Gmax and making the necessary changes but this is where I hit a major road block, I was unable to re-map the textures onto the models.
Exporting the new models with a simple texture into the game proved everything worked and looked as I had hoped, so I reached out to Ranwers and thankfully he provided me with new models in both mesh and 3ds formats.

I have provided two versions,
1. Arms only
2. Arms and Body

Early testing with separate legs for the rudder pedals looked good when making small inputs, larger ones didn't due to the way the pedals pivot so this was left out.
Future aircraft will have pilots with right arm on stick and left arm on throttle, there will also be hand/glove only versions for models that allow this.

I hope to make many more aircraft available as well as giving gunners arms, but this solely relies at this stage at least on the supply of models from Ranwers and whether he wants to also go on this journey.

Thanks to Trav, Sergent Pepper and Shessi for initial testing and feedback.
WxTech for testing before release and of course a big thanks to Ranwers for providing the models.

This work is free from any restrictions, in other words you can do whatever you want with it.

After a couple decades of play where I've always been a ghost, it's initially a bit of a shock to have a visible body at last.  ;) Even though the legs are static, I much prefer the full figure over just the arms. For obvious reasons, leaving the head out of it is no great oddity. Indeed, having it visible would be stranger looking, and could present an obstacle to rearward views as well.

Good stuff!

Looks great, congratulations! Like WxTech said - bit of a shock launching a mission and suddenly seeing a body in the cockpit!

Thanks guys for the positive feedback, and don't forget the R in R & G.

shardana, l tested in B.A.T. and as long as the P-38J folder is placed in 3do/Cockpit path it should work, however I think you may be missing the mod for big files as Ranwers described it.
This can be found in any first post for Ranwers pilot mods within the 3Dfix section.

Hi genXgamer actually I managed to make it work installing the file inside Rawners pilots folder. Now I'm just looking forward to getting spit pilots. A really immersive job!!

It is clear that this is a very meaningful idea.

I also applied this idea up to the co-pilot, but it didn't reach the main pilot.
