New rig
« on: August 15, 2024, 08:45:29 PM »

After a few mishaps with my laptops i am ready to buy a new rig. My longstanding policy is to buy a high-end machine that should last for a while. The last one served me well for more than 8 years. As i am now happily retired this machine will be centered around IL-2 (maybe just venturing on the latest MS flight Simulator). I am still oriented towards a nice laptop as i like freedom of movement. I have allocated a reasonable budget anybody willing to provide some advice? 🙏

Your expectations are somewhat unclear.

Virtually any modern PC can run IL-2. I occasionally "play" IL-2 via RDP connection on our SAS Gameserver (which has no GPU, everything is done remotely over the Internet) and achieve a reliable 50 FPS in DirectX mode. Any new PC with a dedicated GPU can run IL-2 in Perfect mode at 60 FPS without any issues, and possibly 50 FPS in 4K. Any laptop will run IL-2 in DirectX mode flawlessly, and any laptop with a dedicated GPU will perform similarly in Perfect mode.

That's the situation for IL-2. Microsoft Flight Simulator is an entirely different challenge. Systems capable of running MSFS 2020 start at around $1,000, with good ones at around $2,000. Laptops cost about twice as much. For MSFS 2024 (release date November 2024), you can add another $1,000 on top.

So, what exactly are you looking for? The price range starts at $300 (for an IL-2 Desktop in DirectX mode) and goes up to $5,000 (for a good laptop for MSFS 2024).

Thank you for the reply, as mentioned I was just looking for a good laptop with a dedicate Nvidia GPU. I have seen offer on Amazon  Intel Core i7-13700H, RAM 16GB DDR5 5200MHz, 1TB SSD, Display 16.1" FHD IPS 144Hz, RTX 4070 8GB, Wi-Fi 6E, BLE 5.3 for 1500 euro but I cam also  go for something better. Due to some space constraint and also to keep some flexibility of use I rather prefer a laptop to a desktop.

1TB SSD will become an issue with MSFS.
Just recently I have installed a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro to my desktop PC as the 1TB I've had before ran full.
Turned out that MSFS2020 consumed about 660GB of it.

If the space is constrained, a "mini" (console-sized) game PC may be an alternative to a game laptop. With the same specs, it will cost more than a full-size PC but probably less than a laptop.
Dell, Asus, MSI used to make such equipment in past years.
